Through a mix of fun and real world challenges, HP is inviting the TopCoder community to learn how to build the next generation of Big Data and analytics apps using the Haven OnDemand platform. We hope that this series will be interesting, challenging, and rewarding for developers of all levels that are looking to gain valuable new skills and experience. HP Haven Vertica Setup Sweepstakes Challenge
We’re going to be running a series of challenges that show off the features of the Vertica database and analytics platform. However, there is some set up required to deploy a local version of Vertica. We’re asking the [topcoder] community to install a trial version of VMWare and some virtual machine image files to get the Vertica database up and running quickly. After getting the image installed and the database up and running, you’ll run a simple query to validate your installation. The output of this query will be your submission for this challenge. We will choose 50 members at random from those who submit a valid result for this challenge to receive a $100 prize.

HP IDOL OnDemand
Hewlett Packard has also developed a set of JSON-based REST API’s which enable “Big Data”-type processing capabilities allowing developers to process information embedded in unstructured text and images in previously inaccessible formats. This platform is called IDOL OnDemand and at this point is in the Early Access release phase, open for all Innovators to use. Although these API's are not required for the Vertica setup challenge, we encourage you to check them out!

Final Submission Guidelines
1. In your submission zip file you should submit a text file with the query output results and the timing information as designated in the previous section.
2. You are strongly encouraged to use the Vertica VMWare virtual disk image provided. Another option, however, is to set up a Community Edition of Vertica directly. This can be obtained here from the HP Vertica Community site at no cost. This requires a Linux server.
3. Only one submission per Topcoder member is allowed.
Employees and direct and indirect subcontractors of Hewlett-Packard Company and its subsidiaries and other affiliates (“HP”), and employees and direct and indirect subcontractors of HP’s partners (including TopCoder and its affiliates) are not eligible to participate in the challenge.
