Challenge Summary

Most parents who decide to homeschool their children are not professional educators and they face a series of difficult dilemmas: Where do I find high quality and affordable materials that fit my child's individual learning style? How do I choose among various curricula and teaching methods? How do I know if my child is "on track" with his or her learning? How do I create genuinely individualized instruction? How do I provide exceptional learning experiences? How do I teach difficult subjects - like math? HomeScholar.com will answer these questions.
HomeScholar.com is developing a prototype that includes three product lines: 1.sharing of homeschool lesson plans, teaching ideas, and best practices for homeschooling; 2. Merchandise using the HomeScholar and Unschool brands; 3. Exceptional "unschool" events or experiences including educational travel at a discount. Our proposed mantra is "an uncommon unschool community. Once the prototype is launched, Home Scholar will add additional education-based products and services. I is important to know that we are not curriculum authors but we represent most of them. Our target market is parents that homeschool their kids. The homeschool households are neither the most nor the least affluent and there is at least one stay-at-home parent. There is computer and internet access in the home and both parents and children are computer literate. They are active members of their local home school association and often coach their childrens' youth sports teams. The family takes regular vacations that include educational opportunities. While our target parents have at least a high school diploma, the number of college educated parents is just slightly higher than the population at large. Most attend church and describe themselves as Christians the market includes other religions and a fast growing secular community. Minority households comprise about 15% of the market but the proportion is increasing. The logo's overarching use is as the anchor of our website. It should easily translate to t-shirt art, coffee mugs, bumper stickers, etc. ("my child is a home scholar") and be iconic so that it can used on other websites, links, etc. and, of course, be instantly recognizable. There are no specific design limitations or criteria beyond the above. I expect that the winning logo will be simple, colorful, and striking. Subtlety is not encouraged.
