Challenge Summary

Ferguson has been designing and building their new web site the last few weeks using Studio TopCoder. Now its time to have some fun and create the user interactive elements! The first interactive item is going to be the Ferguson "Style Quiz". The Style Quiz is going to help user's identify what type of design style they prefer. The goal of this idea contest is to help Ferguson determine the (home décor) category of a customer from a functional and algorithmic perspective. Please read the contest specification and watch the forums for any questions or feedback concerning this contest. It is important that you monitor any updates provided by the client or Studio Admins in the forums. Please post any questions you might have for the client in the forums.
Ferguson Style Guide Concept Room Design with Your Style in Mind Whether you are remodeling a room, or selecting products for a new home, it's important that the room reflects your style. Choices can be numerous and confusing, so let's make it easy by zoning in on three high level ways to define your personal style. Once we have an idea of which designs appeal to you, we can apply these tastes to your lighting, appliance and plumbing selections, as well as other key elements of your room design. Traditional If your tastes are traditional, you'll show a preference for timeless designs that include simple, symmetrical lines, with elegant details in your kitchen or bath. Transitional If you have a transitional style, your tastes lie somewhere between traditional and contemporary looks, and you merge those styles in a complimentary way. Contemporary If contemporary designs suit you, you have an eye for sleek styling with European influences and an infusion of metallic finishes. Browse our Inspiration Gallery, or take our...style quiz... Idea Challenge How can Ferguson determine a user's style? How can we entice the user to use this style guide? What would make it fun, interesting, and appealing? Our current idea is to present the user with pairs of pictures representing the different styles. The user chooses one from each pair, and their style is then determined by aggregating their choices. We're looking to build upon that idea, or perhaps take a whole new direction. (select from a color palette? or your favorite movie?) Be creative. How would you determine which style category a person fits into? Current Idea - User selects from a series of images that have been given ratings (10 questions) - After the 10 selections are made the user is presented with their preferred style: Traditional, Transitional, or Contemporary (or a mix of designs) - We currently have a design contest running for the User Interface Ideas (Contest Link) Possible User Selection Results After the User makes their selections they could be presented with these Style Results: Traditional - Traditional, but leaning to Transitional - Transitional, but leaning to Traditional Transitional - Transitional, but leaning to Contemporary - Contemporary, but leaning to Transitional Contemporary You can build upon this idea or create something new - this is an idea contest! Stock Photography Watermarked comp photography from istockphoto.com is allowed in this contest. You must follow these instructions or your submission will fail screening: 1) You must include a completed Third Party Content worksheet. It belongs in your Submission folder/zip file -- NOT your Source folder/zip file. 2) Only use photos, and only use them from iStockPhoto. Other iStockPhoto artwork is not allowed. 3) Be sure to keep the watermark intact. If the image is cropped in such a way that the watermark is not visible, please be sure to include the entire image in your source files so we can see that it is a comp image from iStockphoto.com.
