Challenge Summary

Newsweek would like to enhance their Yahoo My Favorites widget to feature the most up to date Newsweek articles, photos and videos. The widget will be accessible through Yahoo's homepage, in the My Favorites module. The current Newsweek widget is limited in design and functionality. The purpose of this contest is to upgrade the widget's design, using Yahoo's developer's guidelines at http://developer.yahoo.com/yap/metro. Examples can also be found in the site mentioned above. This is a quick contest but should be fun. It is a single round contest that requires 2 storyboards. Please as as many questions as you need in the forum to help with your designs.
Goal Allow Yahoo! Users to update their "My Favorites" module with the Newsweek widget, which will provide up to date and compelling Newsweek content within the Yahoo environment. The widget should allow for easy access to Newsweek's content, while also enabling further distribution by allowing users to share and discuss, and access additional content on Newsweek.com. The aim is to develop a widget that keeps users coming back every day and multiple times a day. Requirements Views: create two views within the widget 1. Small view: 2. Rich, interactive, canvas view Personalization: Should show some aspect of personalization ? we?re open to ideas here! As you dig into the Yahoo developer materials is it possible to: allow users to share content using their Yahoo email? Allow them to save items and return to them later? Allow for notifications through the app? Can we integrate Facebook or Twitter feeds? What else? Content: All of the following content should be accessible from any view, but does not need to be fully shown on each view nor does all content need to be visible at once. We are looking for your ideas for how best to accomplish this. You may use tabs, a sliding panel menu, whatever you think works best.
  • Daily Scope - a collection of the most current Newsweek blog posts; these are our shorter features and more tied to current news
  • Featured Stories - Top Stories from Newsweek.com; these are our longer pieces and includes the majority of our content from the magazine
  • Photo Gallery - browseable images from within the widget
  • Videos
  • Newsweek Covers - looking for an idea for how to creatively display both our current, historical (1933 - present) and international covers (Asia, Europe and Latin America)
- Additional content that can be available through a feed if needed (perhaps as a personalization option?)
  • Most Popular / Most Emailed
  • Section feeds (Politics, World, Business, Etc)
  • Columnists feeds
  • Perspectives - our running list of quotes
  • International List - news bites of international coverage
  • Cover Story - latest cover story from the magazine
  • Facebook news feed, friends, etc.
  • Twitter feed
Callouts and links
  • to Newsweek.com
  • to Newsweek's Facebook and Twitter pages
  • to subscribe to Newsweek magazine
Note: Newsweek is open to any creative ways to combine any of the above. Dos: Create a widget-like Small view and a rich, interactive Canvas view. (Example: Addicted to Chappelle's Show; Budget by Mint) Allow fluid dimensions for different sizes in different places around Yahoo!. Use a width of 100% for your applications so that its width adjusts if the window size changes. (Example: Flixter) Ensure that the fluid dimensions of your application enable it to display properly within the smallest available container. Factor in the width of a scrollbar, which is about 20 pixels wide, as well as the fixed height of the window on the Yahoo! homepage (www.yahoo.com). If your window extends below this fixed height, it may not appear without scrolling. Contest Deliverables For this contest, you will need to design the following 2 (2) screens: 1. Small View 2. Canvas View Please refer to the description for each above. Your designs must adhere to the YAP guide: http://developer.yahoo.com/yap/guide/index.html. Target Audience - New and current fans of Newsweek Judging Criteria 1) Designs will be judged based on eye catching characteristics 2) Designs should clearly display all required elements
