Challenge Summary

This contest is to design the mobile web application of the U.K. Meteorological Office (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk). The client is looking for storyboard designs that take the current spirit of the UI elements of the attached spec and innovate around them. Innovations shouldn't be constrained and can be quite radical. They are looking for something that will differentiate their product from the competition. The idea of having the new application listed as a top-ten by Apple and other outlets is extremely attractive. The client already has an iPhone application available in the UK iTunes store. This is an opportunity for a mobile ready web version to reach additional smart phones utilizing a new UI treatment.
Primary Goals 1) Design the look and feel of the U.K. Meterological Office Mobile Web Application. They are looking to replicate the functionality and 'look and feel' of the existing iPhone application with mobile 'ready' pages in HTML 5. 2) Provide innovative additions to the application.? 3) Develop the user flow and application interactions 4) Design the application icon (for launcher) Use the attached mobile web specification (mobileweb.doc) as a general guide of the contest requirement. The provided screenshots should not be followed directly but may used as reference. REMEMBER: this is for a radical change of the web application design, and your design should keep that in its entirety. The final designs should cover all functionality specified in the document with some innovative additions, better look and workflow. IMPORTANT: How the search results (in settings & 5 day forecast) are shown to the user is one of the good problems we would like to be solved by designers. Design Considerations
  • This mobile application will be built as a web based application that uses the browser on mobile devices that support HTML5 (i.e. iPhone, Android, Palm Pre, and any other smartphones).
  • Research related "cool" mobile web applications and how they work/interact/navigate (ESPN, CNN, Google Mail/Reader, Facebook, etc)--sites that have web (touch) specific design websites/applications.
  • There must be a clear way to navigate through the application from screen to screen and the screens themselves should flow together in a logical manner.
  • Weather warnings, these are an important feature of the application, how they are represented in the application is important.
  • Please take into account the limited space available in the screen and how this will affect your navigation.
  • Remember the navigation and scrolling on all screens will be initiated with the users fingers. Buttons and links should be large enough and spaced out enough to ensure that the correct item is selected each time.
  • It is not essential for the first generation of the app to be able to rotate 90 degrees with the device (portrait orientation only should be fine).
  • Intuitive screen flow and obvious calls to actions (next steps).
  • Please research the Apple's iPhone Human Interface Guidelines for Web Application (see references below).

  • You are required to design for 320x480px screen size, but the design should support 400x800px.
  • iPad is NOT in the scope for this project.
  • Use color carefully - your applications must be easy to read on the small screen device
Judging Criteria Your submissions will be judged on overall appearance, use of color and aesthetics, the intuitiveness of the flow of the screens in the app, the interface element look, functionality and placement. Target Audience U.K. citizens as well as international users who might have interest with U.K weather and forecasts. Final Fixes As part of the final fixes phase you may be asked to modify content or overall color/graphics.

Please read the challenge specification carefully and watch the forums for any questions or feedback concerning this challenge. It is important that you monitor any updates provided by the client or Studio Admins in the forums. Please post any questions you might have for the client in the forums.
