Challenge Summary

TopCoder will be partnering with the Robotics Academy of Carnegie Mellon University (www.cmu.edu), a leading research university, to design a social networking/gaming/learning portal for at-home, informal education.  The purpose of the site is to inspire students to pursue computer science and robotics related careers.  This portal will serve students from middle school age and up and will have resources in it that teach and support the development of beginning through advanced programmers.

Stylistically, the portal should not be a formal, rigid, University-style treatment of robotics, math, science and computer science.  It should be styled for 13 to 18 year old users, it should be based on rich, graphics-heavy video-game style concepts.

Your design should be so attractive that children will want to keep returning to the site.

We are looking for:

  • A vibrant color scheme with contrast
  • Bold colors, bold styling
  • A video game feel.  This is not a minimalist website

Round 1

The purpose of this contest is to generate a really attractive and engaging web page design.  The focus of this contest is on a terrific design.  Submissions will be judged for overall appearance, clarity and impact, and not by counting the number of features included beyond the minimum.

Your task in Round One is to design a home page and one user profile page.  You can provide as many pages as you feel is neccessary, but you must include a home page and profile page.

The home page must include:

  • Information about the site (about us, contact us, terms & conditions, etc)
  • Space for one paragraph that describes the site
  • A login and registration box
  • Space for featured content
  • Space to display 5 top achieving students (handle plus an image/avatar)
  • Space to show jump-off points to at least 3 other activities (showing beatiful icons is fine)

The profile page must include:

  • Handle, City and State of the user
  • the awards and achievements earned by the user (see sample image)
  • the achievements should be similar to what you see on XBox, Playstation, and arcade games)

See the two attached images for examples of the kind of styling we like.  YOU MUST NOT COPY THESE DESIGNS AS THEY ARE COPYWRITTEN MATERIAL - they are provided for reference only.

Round 2

Upon completion of the first round the stakeholders will review submissions and provide feedback.  Some of this feedback may include instructions to all participants for feature changes, clarifications, etc.  In Round Two, you will be asked to implement those changes.  In addition, Round Two will require more focus on:

  • Refining "Social Networking" features
  • Style and color updates
  • Updates to the user profile page to show more "achievements"

Please read the challenge specification carefully and watch the forums for any questions or feedback concerning this challenge. It is important that you monitor any updates provided by the client or Studio Admins in the forums. Please post any questions you might have for the client in the forums.
