Challenge Summary

Handshake is a research prototype for business networking run by the MITRE Corporation, created to support valuable relationships between current employees, industry, vendors, academia, sponsors, former employees, etc.

To better support MITRE’s distributed workforce and external non-MITRE users with access to mobile devices, we are looking to develop a mobile application for iOS devices. This iOS client will interact with Handshake’s back-end servers to give users the ability to collaborate with others while on the go.

Round 1

Milestone:

With the milestones, we want to demonstrate that we can establish a baseline of usability and ease of navigation while incorporating the key concepts and entities of the Handshake app.

We highly recommend following to the Apple UI guidelines:

http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/userexperience/conceptual/mobilehig/Introduction/Introduction.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40006556-CH1-SW1

(There are also numerous blogs and guides online that talk about the design guidelines)

Please note that submissions will be judged by users who have been using iPhone and iPad apps personally and at work, and so usability and navigation are of utmost importance. It is important that navigation is intuitive and consistent throughout the app. New ideas are definitely welcome as long as they are consistent, and are not confusing.

NOTE: This is an iPhone app that can be viewed horizontically and vertically. Please keep this in mind as well.

Milestone Delivarables:

The scope of the deliverable focuses a little bit on the main purpose of the app – which is collaboration. To demonstrate navigation and keep focus on collaboration, we will include come Group related use cases for the R1 submission.

Following use cases are required for milestone submission:

4.4.7

4.4.8

4.4.21

4.4.22

4.4.23

4.4.24

4.4.25

Round 2

All Tasks in concept document, includes

Unregistered External User View

Unregistered MITRE User View

Handshake Registered User View

MITRE Member View

Primary Goals:

The goal is to develop an easy-to-use, functional client that takes advantage of iOS conventions to replicate Handshake capabilities on a mobile platform.

Target Audience:

Handshake users – MITRE employees and invited outside participants. For this engagement, we’re concentrating only on users with access to iOS devices.

Judging Criteria:

The wireframes need to:

-       Account for the functional requirements specified in the previous conceptualization contest.

-       Clarify the complete interaction flow – from entering the system to collaborating, posting and editing content, and finally logging out.

-       Define how the user would navigate within the application.

-       Respect the limitations of mobile device interaction: avoid long screens, minimize the amount of required user input, optimize for touch interaction, and so on.

-       Indicate how the presentation can be made to work on small screens (iPhone, iPod) vs larger screens (iPad).
