The client of this project is a company has a project which works on video annotations. The client has a group of users which perform annotation on Segments of the client’s video files. The client already has a tool – a Java application, which the users will  use independent of the site to load their Assignments and  and perform the annotation on the Segments.

The Assignments or Assigned Segments are a sequence of still images that the users step through to annotate (i.e. identify and tag) items, actions and movements. The result of the annotation process will be saved into a  local file, and uploaded into the system where these output files from each Segment will be put together by a process to form the complete “Truth data” for the Video. The Aggregated Truth Data , or simply “Truth” that is is obtained by aggregating users’ annotation of individual Segments ,is used to verify an annotation algorithm developed separately by the client. (Note that the aggregating to form the truth data, as well as the verification of the annotation algorithm is not in scope of this application).

This project seeks to add competition to the manual annotation task. The project will build a website where the client’s users will be able to log in and take part in the competition. The users will still use the Java application to perform annotation, but here every contribution will be tracked and scored. The users can manage assignments and submit the annotation results. Each submitted result will be rewarded with points according to predefined criteria such as accuracy, number of annotations, time needed to perform the job, etc. The website will maintain a leaderboard, visible to all users, which list the users and sort them according to their point. The top users will be rewarded regularly (like every month), as well as recognized as the top users. In addition awards such as “quick worker”, “hard worker”, “socialites”, etc. will also be given to users fulfilling the predefined criteria for each award.

Who is your target audience?
Target audience will be primarily military and government personnel initially, but really a wide range of users eventually.

What branding considerations must the competitors follow?
Since there is no logo right now, we can just assume a logo that is about the size, dimensions, and proportions of the TC logo on the TC site. “TopCoder” can just be replaced with a blank image, or replaced with “Panoptes” as the site name.

What are your primary goals for this design?
So this site should look fresh, friendly, inviting yet very professional and clean. Despite the gaming aspects, the site should focus on the ‘Truthing’ aspect. The goal of the site is to make it very easy to use, but at the same time it should be a very practical tool to manage Assignments.

As far as the look, color palettes of Gmail and Facebook are very clean and attractive, so we can start there. But we don’t want it to look like Gmail/Facebook, and we want to look as clean, but more professional and appealing to non-casual users. Apple.com is an impressive site as far as cleanliness and professional look – and it is very hip and modern.  Without the bright images of products they are trying to sell however, maybe the site will look boring.

Think about giving serious government personnel or soldiers a pleasant and fresh experience on the site without making them feel like they are on another boring military site.

We are excited to see what the designers can come up with however, so please do not strictly limit the color palettes to those of Facebook/Gmail.

What is the design's medium and how well will it translate to other mediums?
No logo currently, but assume the dimensions of the TC logo.

How will your design stand out from your competitors?
As mentioned we should look clean and professional. The homepage may be a bit cluttered with widgets, so we don’t want to overwhelm the user with bright and strong colors. We however need it to look extremely high quality and professional.

Do you have examples of design work from other sources that you'd like the designers to view?
As mentioned earlier, we should go for the clean and light feel of sites like Gmail (default), Facebook and Apple.com. Note that what we are going for here is the clean, uncluttered feel – not necessarily the color schemes.

Do you have all of the materials the designer will need to incorporate into their designs?
No logo for now. Please take TopCoder’s rectangular logo dimensions, and just place “Panoptes” as the name of the site.

What criteria must the designers meet to win?
Design considerations were mentioned earlier. It must be clean, light  and professional.  No restrictions on the colors, but please keep in mind that we don’t want very strong colors, neons, or the like. The site should be inviting and  warm, and should make the users want to stay. Despite our target audience, we want the site to feel very advanced in terms of style – not old/classic.
