Challenge Summary

A major manufacturer of plumbing and wiring products is seeking architectural illustrations to be used in a sales brochure. We require three illustrations, each done in the style of a three-dimensional cross-section, to show potential applications of the client's products. The first illustration will depict a factory that makes food products. The second illustration shows a hospital. The third illustration is of a large university stadium. All three illustrations must be vector-based images that can be manipulated in Adobe Illustrator.

Round 1

Submit all three illustrations:

  • food processing plant
  • hospital
  • university stadium

Round 2

Submit all three illustrations:

  • food processing plant
  • hospital
  • university stadium

Design requirements

The general style of illustration we're looking for is three-dimensional perspective drawing in full color. Attached to this contest (see under "Downloads" at upper right) are the results of a previous contest that asked for illustrations of an electrical grid and a manufacturing plant. The client would like the next three illustrations to be done in a style somewhere between these two examples.

We expect to see extensive use of cross-sections to show the inside of each building. You can add a few vehicles and workers to give a sense of location, but the emphasis should be on the building and its contents.

The following design attributes are desirable:

  • technically accurate
  • detailed
  • dynamic
  • engaging
  • not too cartoonish

All three illustrations must be delivered in a vector-based image format that the client will be able to manipulate with Adobe Illustrator. In the future, the client will add text labels and graphical details to show the exact locations of plumbing and wiring products that can be ordered from the client's catalog. Your illustrations must allow enough room to add such details and labels.

Food processing plant

This plant can be similar in size and general layout to the existing illustration of the manufacturing plant, but it must be specialized for food processing. We would like to see a plant that produces several types of solid food items as well as beverages.

The following components are required:

  • workers wearing sanitary protection (white hats, gloves, coats)
  • conveyor belts
  • mixing vats
  • extruding machine
  • commercial food oven
  • packaging machine
  • bottling machine

Please note that all machinery in a food processing plant is made of stainless steel. You must design the illustration accordingly.

Hospital

Medical workers, hospital beds, and various kinds of medical equipment are expected in the hospital illustration. The following aspects should be emphasized:

  • medical sensors and monitors
  • electrical infrastructure
  • telephones and telephone lines
  • computers and data lines
  • bathrooms and plumbing

Please refer to the sample illustration of a hospital provided by the client for the scale and level of detail, but do not copy it.

University stadium

We require an illustration of a large university stadium. The typical stadium at a large American university has seating for 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. The center of the stadium should contain an American football field. A university stadium typically has a running track around the football field, like the one in this photograph.

The following aspects should be emphasized:

  • floodlights and scoreboard
  • electrical lines
  • large bathrooms
  • plumbing lines

To indicate that the location is a university campus, please show the following features around the stadium:

  • landscaping (trees, grass, sidewalks)
  • two or three low-rise buildings

Less detail is required for these surrounding features. The emphasis should be on the stadium.

Please refer to the sample illustration of a stadium provided by the client for the scale and level of detail, but do not copy it.

Submission requirements

Vector-based images are required so that we can print the illustrations at any resolution. We require three source files, one for each illustration. To make your submission files, please render each file to PNG at 150 ppi resolution.

Target audience

The illustrations will be printed in a sales brochure for viewing by prospective buyers of plumbing and wiring products.

Judging criteria

The best illustrations will be:

  • attractive
  • detailed
  • comprehensive

What to submit
