Challenge Summary

A major manufacturer of electrical and plumbing equipment is seeking illustrations that show where its products can be put to use. Three illustrations are required, each done in the style of a three-dimensional cross-section. The first illustration will show a petrochemical refinery. The second illustration will be an above-ground depiction of a mining operation. The third illustration will portray an alternative energy plant that generates power from wind and water. All three illustrations must be vector-based images that can be manipulated in Adobe Illustrator.

Round 1

All three illustrations are required.

Round 2

All three illustrations are required.

Design requirements

The required style of illustration is three-dimensional perspective drawing in full color, with an emphasis on cross-sections (slices of buildings) to show where the client's products are being used. Attached to this contest are illustrations of an electrical grid, stadium, and hospital that resulted from previous contests, demonstrating some of the elements we are looking for.

The following stylistic attributes are desirable:

  • detailed and technically accurate
  • dynamic, engaging, somewhat playful
  • overall businesslike, not cartoonish

In each illustration, the client's wiring and plumbing products should be depicted with color-coded lines:

  • electrical wiring (high voltage, low voltage)
  • telephone cables
  • data cables (Internet)
  • plumbing (water, steam)
  • air ducts

Wires, cables, and pipes should be connected to suitable machinery such as the following:

  • electrical closets, junction boxes, generators
  • telephones, security cameras
  • desktop computers, servers
  • boilers, water tanks
  • furnaces, air conditioners

All three illustrations must be delivered in a vector-based image format that the client will be able to manipulate with Adobe Illustrator. The client will later add text labels to show the exact locations of wiring and plumbing products. Please leave room for such labels, but do not add any text yourself.

Petrochemical refinery

A petrochemical refinery is an industrial plant that transforms crude oil into many different chemicals. The various steps in the process are explained in this diagram, and the expected level of detail is shown in this illustration (do not copy these images). There are many opportunities to show pipes and wires in and among the refining machinery.

Mining operation

We are seeking an illustration of above-ground mine buildings only. In this image, for example, only the preparation plant, silos, and other buildings on the surface are of interest (do not copy the image). We do not want to see the below-ground portions of the mine. A few mining vehicles such as dump trucks, rock crushers, and others are desired, but the emphasis should be on the buildings involved in a mining operation.

Alternative energy plant

We would like to see a power plant that generates electricity with wind turbines and a small hydroelectric dam (do not copy these images). Please emphasize the electrical cables and machinery, including transformers, transmission towers, and junction boxes. The environmental friendliness of the plant can be conveyed by showing green surroundings, but the focus should be on the buildings and equipment.

Submission requirements

Vector-based images are required so that we can print the illustrations at any resolution. We require a separate source file for each illustration, making three in total. To make your submission files, please render each file to PNG at 150 ppi resolution.

Target audience

The illustrations will be printed in brochures that are used to sell electrical and plumbing equipment.

Judging criteria

The best illustrations will be:

  • attractive
  • detailed
  • comprehensive

What to submit

Submission zip file: Three PNG images (one for each building) rendered from the vector-based image files at 150 ppi.

Source zip file: Three vector-based image files (one for each building).

Preview image: Create a 1024x1024 JPG or PNG file in RGB color mode and insert a screenshot from your submission.
