Challenge Summary

A major insurance company is building a game to teach its customers about driving safety. We are seeking full 3D models of three vehicles and three static game scenes. These game assets will be imported into the Unity game engine. You can prepare your submission using any 3D modeling software that exports to FBX format.

Round 1

Design all assets listed in the contest specification.

Round 2

Improve your designs in response to milestone feedback.

Overview

Our client is developing a driving-safety game for the Kinect for Windows platform. The game will be installed in a kiosk with a large monitor. Players will make gestures and whole-body movements to simulate the safety techniques required to advance in the game.

In this contest, we require 3D models of three vehicles and three static game scenes. Game scenes should be filled with a reasonable number of fixed objects, but movable objects are not required. Vehicles should not be identical to any particular model made by a real manufacturer.

Each vehicle and game scene is designed for a certain type of environment:

  • town
  • off-road
  • water

The environments are detailed further below.

In general, the desired style is neither photorealistic nor cartoonish. Although the game should be entertaining, it is also meant to be educational. We are targeting young adults, not children.

Town

Vehicle: We would like to see a small SUV or crossover vehicle. Bear in mind that American cars tend to be larger than European or Asian ones. You can take your design cues from the following sampling of American vehicles, but do not copy any one of them.

Scene: The desired game scene is a small town with low-rise commercial buildings and some residential buildings. There are traffic lights, stop signs, and crosswalks.

Off-road

Vehicle: The vehicle must be an ATV. You can use the following models for inspiration, but do not make an exact copy.

Scene: The game scene is in the wilderness. There are dirt trails but no paved roads. The terrain should be varied: hills, rocks, mud, and sandy sections are desired. There should be bushes and trees to act as obstacles.

Water

Vehicle: A small motorboat is desired. The following are representative samples; as always, do not copy any one of them.

Scene: We would like to see a lake with a beach and docks. The background should be rendered in a different color palette than the road and off-road scenes.

Target Audience

We are mostly targeting younger drivers who were recently licensed or who may still be working toward their driving license.

Judging Criteria

We are looking for complete, reasonably detailed, attractive designs that are suitable for a game about driving safety.

Textures

In this contest, you are permitted to use stock textures from the following sites:

Please mention the use of any such textures in your declaration.

File format

The game will be implemented with the Unity game engine, which can import graphical assets in FBX format. You may prepare your submission with any software that exports to FBX, including Maya, 3ds Max, Cheetah 3D, Cinema 4D, and Blender. Your source files must be in FBX format.

Your submission files, however, must be in PNG or JPEG format. Please insert the vehicle into the scene and render it from several camera positions to highlight how it will appear in the game. At a minimum, we would like to see the following views:

  • overhead
  • panorama
  • first-person view: the player is driving the vehicle

What to submit

Submission zip file: Several PNG or JPEG renderings of the game scene and vehicle.

Source zip file: Source files in FBX format.

Preview image: Crop one of your renderings to 1024x1024 size.

Final fixes

You may be asked to complete one round of minor changes to ensure that your submission meets the stated requirements of this contest. More information about final fixes.

Please read the challenge specification carefully and watch the forums for any questions or feedback concerning this challenge. It is important that you monitor any updates provided by the client or Studio Admins in the forums. Please post any questions you might have for the client in the forums.
