Challenge Summary

Our client, a major manufacturer of industrial and electrical tools, seeks a detailed illustration of a hydraulic fracturing operation. Hydraulic fracturing is a process for extracting natural gas from underground rock formations. The illustration will show the surface of the site, concentrating on industrial details. The backdrop is a rural landscape where hydraulic fracturing typically occurs. The illustration will appear in a sales brochure. Therefore, the main goal of this contest is to depict many potential uses of the manufacturer's products.

Round 1

Submit a complete illustration according to the specification below.

Round 2

Improve and refine your illustration in response to client feedback.

Overview

Hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking" for short, is a method to extract natural gas that is trapped underground. Fracking is a major growth industry in the United States because natural gas is seen as a desirable alternative to oil and coal. Our client wishes to offer its products to this growing market. The client's products are industrial and electrical tools, with an emphasis on cables and pipes of all kinds:

  • pipes for air, water, other liquids and gases
  • electrical cables for transmitting low-voltage and high-voltage electricity
  • data cables for transmitting telephone, Internet, audio, video signals

In this contest, we are seeking an illustration that portrays potential uses of the client's products in the context of a hydraulic fracturing operation. The illustration should be done in the following style:

  • interesting and dynamic, but not too cartoonish
  • accurate depictions of industrial and electrical infrastructure
  • an attractive background that does not distract the viewer from the main goal of showing the client's products in use

The required content of the illustration is the following:

  • in the foreground, a detailed view of the fracking operation
  • in the background, the iconic shapes of pumpjacks used for extracting oil
  • also in the background, a thriving rural community

A separate web page contains detailed instructions and sample images. Do not copy the sample images on that page; use them for reference only and make sure that everything in your illustration is original work.

For your reference, we are also providing a portfolio of past winners in this contest series and an example of a printed brochure that incorporates a contestant's work.
