Challenge Summary
Welcome to "LBT - TV Smart Platform Design Concept Challenge". Ready to challenge the status quo in TV watching? Do you also agree that it’s time to take TV viewership to the next level? Also curious how to get more out of your TV subscription? This challenge is about finding new ways to help TV viewers watch more relevant, good quality content on more channels. Together with you we want to challenge the fact that most TV viewers watch only 10% of the channels they’re subscribed to. What can we do about this? In this challenge, we need you to create design concepts to plan a simple and intuitive next generation TV experience.
Round 1
Initial Design Concept for client Review
Round 2
All requirements as stated in challenge details with client feedback applied.
Challenge Details
The main goal of this challenge is to place yourself in the minds of everyday TV viewers who start up their digital TV and start clicking away. There are 3 states of mind you should keep in the back of your head:
1) “I know exactly what I want to watch”
2) “I’m in the mood for…(e.g. a movie, a crime-series)”;
3) “I’m bored, surprise me”.
We want you to design and create an extremely simple user experience that really helps in solving the design problem we are facing. We believe that the only way to do this is to provide us something that we can quickly bring to life, as if we are really watching TV within the experience you crafted!
We are looking for you to create design concepts for this new TV experience. Always keep in mind the “No UI” principles and be smart in the on-screen user interface you propose vs. using for instance the remote control.
Design Problem
TV viewers with digital TV subscriptions are often exposed to many more channels then they actually watch. They seem to stick to their habits of just watching their favourites channels and simply clicking up and down. How do we motivate people to go beyond their top 10 channels and discover programs we know they will like on other channels? How to promote the full width of linear TV viewership without slapping a complex user interface in their face… And keep in mind: The experience must be simple enough for anyone, yet support advanced users’ needs
IMPORTANT!! Design Considerations:
- We are religious about a “No UI” approach. This approach has the following three principles (incl. real examples):
* Eliminate interfaces to embrace natural processes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLlwC2wK7UE)
* Leverage computers instead of catering to them (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zBjJmt2W90)
* Create a system that adapts for people (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9qCLs8txBo).
- Find an innovative balance between known methods vs. surprises
- Take into consideration that we can also offer X days of catch-up TV for each channel
Screen Requirements:
Explore ideas and create design concepts around creating a new TV viewer experience. Please note, we are not expecting electronic program guide (EPG) as solution. Several starting ideas that you can explores can be found below :
1. A screen where user will see summary of important information such as the latest box office movies or popular tv programs and user information
2. History
- A screen like “Last” button that available on the Comcast X1 platform
- it should be surfacing any viewed content in customer’s recent history, maybe showing 5-10 latest content that user watched.
3. Smart Assistant
- A screen for Smart tuning; If you watch a specific show every week on the same time, maybe your TV system should do something with this intelligence.
4. Auto-favourites
- Why do you still need to set your favourite channels in a separate favourite list?
5. Personalization
- How do we adapt the viewership to the person that actually watching TV?
6. Filter
- Giving our customers the ability to navigate through the channel line-up in various ways outside of an EPG (so perhaps by genre, by country “I want to see the German channels”, by popularity, by trending, etc.)
7. Any other screens that you think important and able to strengthen your design concept to improve TV viewer experience.
Branding Guidelines :
- As your starting point, you can check solution offers by winning wireframes from our previous challenge (attached in challenge details). You can use the wireframes as starting point to create your design concept, but we are expecting more ideas in your design.
- Create it for TV device in 1920×1080px screen resolution.
- Please remember, "Less is More" is the important keyword that you must pay attention when start creating your design concept.
- When creates your concept design, ask your self, will the interactions and look and feel of your concepts already simplify the user experience and solves our problems?
