Challenge Summary

Welcome to "LBT - TV Smart Platform Wireframes Challenge". Ready to challenge the status quo in TV watching? Do you also agree that it’s time to take TV viewership to the next level? Also curious how to get more out of your TV subscription?

This wireframe challenge is about finding new ways to help TV viewers watch more relevant, good quality content from more channels then they currently do and to create the next generation zapping experience. Together with you we want to challenge the fact that most TV viewers watch only 10% of the channels they’re subscribed to or simply zap the night away...What can we do about this? There is a lot of cool content on other channels that matches user's taste/preferences -  tell us how to present the right stuff at the right moment and in such a way that it doesn’t annoy the viewers.

And one small request…don't propose an electronic program guide (EPG) ;-)!

This goal of this challenge is to wireframe this user experience around linear TV viewing. As a compass we are religious about a “No UI” approach. This approach has the following three principles (incl. real examples):

1. Eliminate interfaces to embrace natural processes…Mercedes keyless-go
2. Leverage computers instead of catering to them…Mercedes Mbrace2
3. Create a system that adapts for people…Nest Thermostat

Round 2

All requirements as stated in challenge details with client feedback applied

This challenge is part of a series of challenges to design a very simple and intuitive "Next generation TV experience". The main goal of this challenge is to place yourself in the minds of everyday TV viewers who start up their digital TV and start zapping away since they have no clue what to watch. So we are really only focusing on the basic zapping experience and nothing else.

Challenge Problem

TV viewers with digital TV subscriptions are often exposed to much more channels then they actually watch. They seem to stick to their habits of just watching their favourites channels and simply zapping up and down. Some of the key questions we have:

- How do we motivate people to go beyond their top 10 channels and discover programs we know they will like on other channels while they are watching TV?
- What are the right points of intervention to do this?
- How can we ensure that they have the feeling of not missing anything?
- How can we give them the feeling that with this new experience they make good use of their channel subscriptions.
- How to promote the full width of linear TV viewership without slapping a complex and annoying user interface in their face?
- How to make sure this experience is simple enough for anyone, yet support advanced users’ needs?
- We want you to wireframe an extremely simple user experience around linear TV viewing that really helps in solving the design problem we are facing. We believe that the only way to do this is to provide us something so simple that we can quickly bring to life, as if we are really watching TV within the experience you crafted! Small little additions/details can have a big impact…

IMPORTANT!! UX Considerations:

1. Points of intervention around zapping to keep in mind:
- Tuning to a channel from a start screen
- Tuning or zapping to a channel
- End of a programme/view
- The user has paused live TV
- The user picks up the remote while watching something
- Halfway a program the user doesn’t like it
- The commercials start
- .....etc

2. Always keep in mind the “No UI” principles and be smart in the on-screen user interface you propose

3. Find an innovative balance between known methods (setting your favourites) vs. surprises (the system does things for me, amazing!)

4. Think about the following examples for inspiration:
- “Last” button on the Comcast X1 platform; surfacing any viewed content in customer’s recent history, no matter where they found it.
- The ‘live TV’ experience of the new Time Warner Cable TV App on the Roku media player; simple pressing left allows you to quickly see what’s available and you can filter live TV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hp3N6AFMp1c
- One-button access to an overview of 5 live channels and being able to skip to the next 5 live channels…
- Smart tuning; If you watch a specific show every week on the same time, maybe your TV system should do something with this intelligence?
- Auto-favourites; why do you still need to set your favourite channels in a separate favourite list?
- Giving our customers the ability to navigate through the channel line-up in various ways outside of an EPG (so perhaps by genre, by country “I want to see the German channels”, by popularity, by trending, etc.)
- Take into consideration that we can also offer many days of catch-up TV for each channel and you could practically start-over any program where you’ve missed for instance the first 10 minutes. So maybe combine live TV viewing with content that was broadcasted in the last days and you might have missed.

Screen Requirements :
Any interface you can think of on top of full screen live TV

Branding Guidelines :
- No specific branding guidelines
- Create it for TV device in Full HD screen resolution

Target Audience
- Any digital TV viewer
- You as TV viewer!

Judging criteria
- How well it solves the customer problems we are facing and not throw fancy ideas around; be realistic and keep TV viewers like yourself in mind!
- Completeness and accuracy of the areas of functionality and content
- How well your wireframes provide a consistent user flow and clear information architecture for the application
- Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication…
