Challenge Summary
Welcome to the United - In-Flight App - Part 1- Mobile UI/UX Design Concepts Challenge. This In-flight App we will be focusing in on four (4) distinct use case scenarios for a singular application that will be used by United Flight Attendants. We will be targeting the designs for Nokia Lumina 1520..
The Application will focus on four areas of work flow:
1) Point of Sale - selling food and items to passengers during flight.
2) Loyalty - Having a list of passengers for a flight (flight manifesto) and passenger ratings, needs, and requests to enable the flight attendant to better service passengers.
3) Workability - Having the ability to report maintenance issues with the plan and submit them to the maintenance department.
4) Flight Attendant Specific - This area of the map would contain the flight attendant’s profile, work schedule, union affiliation, message board and other content related to the flight attendants job.
For this challenge, we will be focusing in on the "1) Point of Sale and 2) Loyalty" portions of the Application.
We are also running another challenge that is focusing in on the Workability and Flight Attendant portions of the site so you have double the chances to win!

For this Challenge, you will creating design based on the below use-case scenarios and also we have provided a design direction document to help you get started.
Use-Case Scenarios:
1) Point of Sale:
Jane is a flight attendant on a United flight from Chicago to Boston. As she is serving passengers their in-flight beverages she is asked by a passenger in seat 28B to purchase additional food items for the flight. She pulls up her inFlight App and quickly finds the item that the passenger has requested. She asks the passenger if they would be interested in any items from the Duty Free catalog. The passenger is keen on a new watch and Jane is quickly able to access the item from her APP and confirm with the passenger that they want to purchase this item. Jane takes the passenger’s credit card and processes the transaction from the inFlight Application. The passenger’s order has been added to his profile and he receives information on when he can expect to get his brand new watch.
2) Passenger Loyalty:
Jane is a flight attendant on a United flight from Chicago to Boston. Prior to boarding Jane takes a look at the passenger manifesto to see if there are any passengers that have special needs or requests. From the inFlight APP she is able to quickly view passenger information, view pre-orders, and any associated notes and ratings of her passengers. This allows her to better services her passengers by knowing ahead of time how to anticipate their needs. Jane is also able to update passenger information by adding passenger ratings, notes, and other comments that will help United staff better service the passenger on future flights. Jane is also able to pull up the passenger’s trip itinerary and inform the passenger of connecting flights or other information that will assist the passenger on their trip.

- Make the screens looks like a native app as shown in design direction..
- We are targeting Nokia Lumia 1520, so have your designs to be of size 1080 x 1920 px (Portrait Version)..
Required Screens:
We need below screens to be designed...
1) Dashboard and Main Navigation:
- This would be the application’s main dashboard that a flight attendant would see upon opening the application.
- They would have quick access to the four main areas of the application as well as a top line view of their profile.
- We would also like to see what the main navigation menu would look like that will be accessible from every screen within the application.
2) Points of Sale Dashboard and Shopping:
- Users gets to this screen by choosing "Points of Sale" in navigation..
- They are presented with a dashboard of items that are specific to the point of sales.
- For this design exercise, we will show how a user can browse items in “The Boutique” and select items based on category, show item details and then proceed to checkout.
3) Item Detail and Checkout:
- We need to show the product details once they choose an item from previous step, come up ideas on what information can be shown here?
- After adding products to cart, they will have ability to checkout by viewing list of items in the cart.
4) Customer Loyalty Dashboard and Passenger List:
- This is the our 2nd use case scenario. It begins with a flight attendant selecting the flight that they are about to be on from their schedule. Once they have selected a flight they are able to view the passenger manifesto and view passenger details. Flight Attendants need to be able to pull passenger lists for flights, get simple CRM functionality that would allow them to note/read when a customer (especially a loyal customer) needs extra special attention to maintain their loyalty to United. Example: customer delayed or inconvenienced earlier in trip may need a free drink.
5) Passenger Detail:
- This is a screen that shows a passenger detail. It contains top level information about a passenger, an “uber” like rating, and space for additional notes about the passenger that will be helpful for the flight attendant. If the passenger has requested any pre-orders prior to the flight, the flight attendant can view them from the passenger detail.
Target Audience:
- United Flight Attendants
Judging Criteria:
- How well you plan the user experience and capture your ideas visually
- Cleanliness of your graphics and design
- Does the screens capture all the above mentioned details?
