Welcome to the NASA Free Flying Robot Mission Patch & Naming Challenge! As part of this challenge, we need your help to:

  1. Design a custom mission patch for a robot that will fly on-board the International Space Station. A mission patch is a small graphic that includes the name of a space mission.
  2. Develop a name for the “Free Flying Robot”. Something catchy & cool.

Problem Background & Goal
A robotics group out of NASA’s Ames Research Center is building a Free Flying Robot; the goal is to get the FFR on-board the International Space Station in 2017. Please note that the mission patch / name should not be an acronym.

The goal of this contest is to:

  1. Design a custom mission patch for a robot that will fly on-board the International Space Station. A mission patch is a small graphic that includes the name of a space mission.
  2. Develop a name for the “Free Flying Robot”. Something catchy & cool.

What is the FFR capable of?

  • It is capable of functioning autonomously, but can also be controlled by a flight crew on-board the ISS or from Earth.
  • Conducting zero gravity robotics experiments
  • Carrying mobile sensors such as an RFID reader for logging inventory, a camera for inspecting, etc.
  • It will have an arm that can grasp onto objects to help remain stationary.
  • It will have fans that will allow it to move and rotate in any direction.
  • It is rechargeable and capable of returning to a charger and charging on it's own.
  • It is small and maneuverable  (diameter less than 30cm) for working inside ISS.

  • Mission patch usage - various media (print, online, etc).

Mission Patch Sizes:
The mission patch will have a few different uses. Please ensure that your design is capable of being resized - the variance can be anywhere from 2 inches up to 12 inches. Example sizes:

  • Stickers / Mission Patches - 4-6” tall
  • Paper Handouts - 6-12’ tall
  • Presentations / Social Media - 2” tall

Mission Patch Requirements:

  • The graphic must represent the target audiences stated below in "Target Audience"
  • Please stay away from gradients, as they will not be able be easily reproduced across all media.
  • You must show your mission patch on a white or black background (You MUST use the template provided)
  • The mission patch must be shown in various forms on the template (different color choices, layout, font use etc.)
  • You must identify your color theme in the submission.
  • Designs must be created as VECTOR artwork so they can be resized without a loss of quality. Make sure your mission patch quality is not diminished when scaled up or down.

FFR Name
You will be judged on your creativity and uniqueness of your name. The winner(s) will be selected by NASA. Please provide a detailed description of your idea(s) so that we can fully understand.

Judging Criteria

  • Requirements: Does your mission patch meet the requirements as stated in the description?
  • Relevance: How does your mission patch "fit" with the purpose?
  • Quality: Does your mission patch go look fresh, professional and clean? Is the composition/layout well done? Have you used typography in a meaningful way?
  • Concept: Does your mission patch present a new and interesting concept? Is it simple, yet memorable?

Please create your preview image as one (1) 1024x1024px JPG or PNG file in RGB color mode at 72dpi and place a screenshot of your submission within it.

Submission File
Submit JPG/PNG image files based on contest submission requirements stated above

Source Files
All original VECTOR source files of the submitted design. Files should be created in Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape and saved as layered AI or EPS files. Your source files must meet these requirements:
1) The AI/EPS file with text intact (not outlined).
2) The AI/EPS file with text in outline format.

Final Fixes
As part of the final fixes phase you may be asked to modify your graphics (sizes or colors) or modify the overall colors.

Please read the challenge specification carefully and watch the forums for any questions or feedback concerning this challenge. It is important that you monitor any updates provided by the client or Studio Admins in the forums. Please post any questions you might have for the client in the forums.

Stock Photography

Stock photography is not allowed in this challenge. All submitted elements must be designed solely by you. See this page for more details.

How To Submit

  • Upload your submission in three parts (Learn more here). Your design should be finalized and should contain only a single design concept (do not include multiple designs in a single submission).
  • If your submission wins, your source files must be correct and “Final Fixes” (if applicable) must be completed before payment can be released.
  • You may submit as many times as you'd like during the submission phase, but only the number of files listed above in the Submission Limit that you rank the highest will be considered. You can change the order of your submissions at any time during the submission phase. If you make revisions to your design, please delete submissions you are replacing.

Winner Selection

Submissions are viewable to the client as they are entered into the challenge. Winners are selected by the client and are chosen solely at the client's discretion.

Submission format

Your Design Files:

  1. Look for instructions in this challenge regarding what files to provide.
  2. Place your submission files into a "Submission.zip" file.
  3. Place all of your source files into a "Source.zip" file.
  4. Declare your fonts, stock photos, and icons in a "Declaration.txt" file.
  5. Create a JPG preview file.
  6. Place the 4 files you just created into a single zip file. This will be what you upload.
