Challenge Description:
The Blue Holidays Mobile Application is an application that enables a user to see holidays based on the location of their team mates around the globe.  This is meant to be a simple and straightforward experience where the user can simply find, read and import results as desired.

How it works:
Mike's team is distributed across four continents and at least seven countries. Mike knows some of the national holidays for his team, but there is no central calendar to tell him what days his team members may be out of the office.

Using Blue Holidays, Mike can find out what international holidays are upcoming, and add them to his work calendar. It can be a one-time export by country, or a lookup anytime.

At a conceptual level, this is how we envision the application flow:

  • User opens the app and taps on one or more countries
  • App returns holidays by date. Preferably highlights any holidays that day or business week.
  • User has option to import one or more (or all) holidays to their device calendar

We are looking to you, the designers, to come up with an interesting and usable design and all around user experience!

Inspiration (do not copy!):

Design Concept Goals:
- How should this mobile application look?
- How quickly the user can find what he wants?
- The application should be easy to use.
- Think simple but effective solutions! Have fun creating this - let us know how you think it should work!
- Want this to be iOS and Android mobile application.
- We are looking for visual elements not changes to navigation.
- We want this to be MODERN application design!

Screen Sizes:
- Mobile Resolution: 640px * 1136px
Make sure you create graphic in 'shape' format, so when resize for retina versions, the graphics still look sharp! It will be great if you can provide the landscape version.

Required Screens:
- We would like you to suggest features/screens that this app should incorporate

1) Icon/Logo

  • Show something that conveys the idea clearly and simply as an app icon and logo within the application (when appropriate)
  • Think through how it would fit well with the theme and function of the app in relation to the IBM branding

2) Splash/Loading Screen:

  • What the user sees when they tap the app icon and it’s loading
  • Should be consistent in appearance and use for both an icon and as a logo

3) Home page/Countries view:

  • Think through the best scenarios for ease of use for the user scenarios
  • A map is probably ~not~ the optimal experience here, since there are many countries and they can be relatively small, hard to find or even unknown to the user

4) Holiday Results view:

  • Holidays are returned to the user by date
  • Preferably highlights or emphasizes any holidays on that day and/or business week
  • User has the option to import one, multiple or all found holidays into their device calendar
  • This can indicate date ranges set by the user, or select ahead, such as if the user was planning for three months from now
  • Alternate views might be useful, such as list and calendar view.  Consider what would be the easiest formats for an app user to view

Feel free to additional screens or views you think would enhance the UX of the application but remember that this is meant to be a VERY simple application with quick access and minimal clicks/taps to get to any function or view.

Important:

  • Keep things consistent. This means all graphic styles should work together.
  • All of the graphics should have a similar feel and general aesthetic appearance

Target User:

  • The user will be anyone in IBM who wants to query holidays in other countries.
  • This can be in environments ranging from inside offices to noisy and distracting city streets, so designing for optimal mobile experiences should keep this in mind

Judging Criteria:

  • How well you plan the user experience and capture your ideas visually
  • Cleanliness of your graphics and design
  • Your design should possible to build and make sense as a mobile application
  • Creative solutions for an intuitive and highly usable experience
