Challenge Summary
Welcome to the 3D Systems Education App Idea Generation Challenge - 3dsystemstouch
Our world relies on technology but until now we’ve had two different worlds. The objects behind the screen are just digital ideas that we could never reach out and touch.
3D Printing changed this forever by allowing us to materialize these ideas into actual objects. But what if we could touch these objects before we print them? What if we could touch our digital world? Enter haptic technologies. Haptics turns digital experiences into tactile sensations; pressure, balance, textures and gravity these can actually be felt and can actually be coded.
The Touch Haptic Stylus by 3D Systems now makes desktop haptic technology mainstream.
See these videos below to see how this device can potentially change the world:

Are you up to the challenge?
Round 1
For Round 1, you are expected to submit your completed idea, including:
1. Abstract Paragraph
2. The “Why”
3. User Stories
4. Future enhancements/extensions for this application
5. Screenshots or Mockups
Round 2
For Round 2, you are expected to submit your completed idea again. At this point, you may have made changes to your idea, based on any feedback from the client (if applicable).
Requirements:
We want YOU to generate new ideas for applications with the Touch Haptic Stylus. Ideas that will make tactile experiences accessible to the masses.
For this ideation challenge, we want you to come up with ideas on how this new Touch device can change the way we teach/instruct! We want you to come up with the killer education/research app!
Here are some examples that the company has thought about for education:
- Physics Lessons in Zero G.
- Fluid dynamics analysis at the bottom of the ocean.
- Ever taught geometry on the moon.
- What if you could go inside a graphing calculator?
- What does music feel like?
- What could be made with Virtual Reality Haptic Erector Set?
- Haptically Exploring plate tectonics.
Organizing Your Submission:
Your submission should contain a detailed description of your idea. Preferably one document, with four (4) sections:
1. Abstract Paragraph – Describe your killer app in this paragraph!
- e.g. The Zero G desktop application allows researchers to understand the effects of zero/micro gravity on different material strength and durability in extreme conditions. Currently, experiments can be conducted that make this type of study possible, however we are limited by physical constraints in what kinds of materials we can test, and testing in Zero/Micro G is very costly as true tests would have to be conducted on the ISS. Currently, simulations are limited in that certain types of reactions with other objects need to be precompiled etc.
2. The “Why” – Tell us why this is the killer app for this device, and what need it is addressing and how this can change the world!
- e.g. This app will bridge the gap between simulations and real life practical medical training by making courses more accessible to a wider range of students. This is accomplished by removing the need to travel for training, and instead focusing more on the practical aspects of surgery, etc.
3. User Stories – Write 2 or more user stories/use cases for this application.
- e.g.
1…..
2….
3 An Orthopedic surgeon peel off layers of skin and ligaments to inspect the cartilage damage, and measure the extent of the damage by… etc..
4. Future enhancements/extensions for this application
- e.g. This application can be extended to training for emergency reuse operations simply by reprogramming the training module… etc
5. Screenshots or Mockups
- You are encouraged to provide screenshots or mockups of your idea to explain it more, any final winner that provides screenshots or mockups in his idea will win an extra $100.
Although there are no limit to number of submissions you can upload, you should only upload multiple submissions if each one is comprehensive and substantially different from your others. Within these constraints, you are free to describe any number of alternative approaches and extra features. In fact, we encourage you to do so. You can't have too many ideas!
As a reminder you can submit anything you think highlights your idea clearly.
The sky's the limit! Good luck!
Submission & Source Files:
Preview Image
Create your preview image as one (1) 1024x1024 JPG or PNG file in RGB color mode at 72dpi and place a screenshot of your submission within it.
- You can take screenshot of your idea document and submit it.
- You can provide a blank image file and use it as preview image.
Submission Files
All original source files of the submitted ideas; it can be PDF, HTML, DOC, TXT or RTF file.
Source Files

Final Fixes
As part of the final fixes phase you may be asked to complete one round of minor changes to ensure your submission meets the stated requirements of this challenge.
