Challenge Summary
Welcome to the SunShot - Solar Retina – Real Time PV Data Design Challenge! In this challenge we are looking to design a new page for users to view real time intelligence of total “behind-the-meter” solar PV generation on the distribution system. Using crowd-sourced solar generation data from actual PVs on the distribution grid, we provide superior distributed solar generation analysis.
We currently have the client website and we need to match the general UI of the site and improve on it.

Background:
The SolarRetina is a software platform that provides real-time intelligence of total “behind-the-meter” solar PV generation on the distribution system. Using crowd-sourced solar generation data from actual PVs on the distribution grid, we provide superior distributed solar generation analysis.
Customers: Serve 3 Segments:
- Utilities and Grid Operators.
- Municipalities.
- Electricity Traders.
What’s The Customer’s Problem that we solve?
1- Utilities and Grid Operators:
- They are having difficulty making reliable plans for integrating and accounting for increased levels of solar power on their grids because they don’t know how much electricity the distributed solar systems on their grids are producing. Planning issues include:
-- Setting Feeder Capacity Limits
-- Knowing what equipment/infrastructure to upgrade
-- Setting Capacity and dispatch requirements
2- Municipalities:
- They are having difficulty measuring and tracking their progress toward sustainability and solar goals because they don’t know how much solar electricity the distributed solar systems in their jurisdiction are producing.
- Because they cannot measure and track progress, they are unable to draft informed and effective policies and regulations.
- Because they cannot measure and track progress, they are having trouble engaging with their citizens about how they are meeting their solar mandates.
3- Electricity Traders:
- They are having difficulty tracking, understanding, predicting electricity demand in urban areas because distributed solar generation is distorting how demand values appear. In other words, they only see net-demand (“net-load”) and so they are having trouble differentiating between increases in supply from solar systems from decreases in demand. We can provide them with the supply data they need to differentiate between the two.
What do we actually provide?
In most basic form, we have energy v. time v. location data for all solar PV’s on the distribution grid, which we use to address challenges and solve the customer challenges listed above.

Design Goals:
- How should this page need to look?
- How quickly the user can find what he wants?
- The website should be easy to use.
- Your solution needs to be a Responsive Design Solution when viewed on Portrait and Landscape view of mobile devices.
- Think simple but effective solutions! Have fun creating this - let us know how you think it should work!
Screen Sizes:
- Desktop: 1024px width and height as required.
- Mobile Resolution: Design for iPhone 6 Retina Display 750px x 1334px.
Make sure you create graphic in 'shape' format, so when resize for retina versions, graphic still look sharp! It will be great if you can provide the landscape version.
Required Screens:
- We would like you to suggest features/screens that this app should incorporate
1) Layer 1- map of city:
- This should show a map of Washington DC.
- openstreetmap.org is an option, in addition to google maps, bing, esri....
- Ability to select/draw area for further details.
- Animated map of generation over time. in such a scenario, each PV location (~800) would be represented by a dot or heat map dot that would expand and contract relative to the amount of energy being produced. Movie could cover a week’s worth of production. User should be able to specify time frame for the animation
2) Layer 2- area selection:
The user can do the following to the map to make selection:
- Select a time period of interest: Start Date and Time, End Date and Time
- Draw a freeform line or shape around section of interest by placing dots around an area (like in google maps)
- The user should be able to click on additional options to see other views of the maps, such as:
-- entering a zip code
-- select a ward (example:https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?msa=0&mid=zX4PuQ4LBt0s.kGLMkxNYuQqs)
-- select a county (similar to wards)
-- select other maps overlay (such as a feeder line) (example: http://www.questargas.com/FL24/images/Feeder%20Line%2024.png)
This means:
- We need a way for the user to pick from a predefined list of selected areas (Ward, Zip Code, County, etc...).
- You should know that the map should be visibly populated with "dots" or symbols representing each solar installation in DC. Users should be able to draw areas around these. Perhaps, when a user hovers over each dot, there will be a fact bubble which will state the system's size: e.g. 3.5kW.
3) Layer 3- provided statistics/facts bubble about selected area:
- Total Nameplate of Area. This means the total, in kW of all PV systems in the selected area. For example, if there are 3 PV systems in the area and each system is 3kW in size, then the total would be 9kW.
- Number of Systems in Area.
- Largest System Size.
- Smallest System Size.
- Average System Size.
- Maximum Generation in the time period selected: Provide Timestamp and amount in kWh.
- We’d also like to consider having placeholders for a few other “Statistics” that we may not want to calculate or have active for the demo, but for which we’d like to display placeholders for purposes of demonstrating future capabilities. Those include: “Ramp Rate,” Max Generation v. Net-Load, Variability Occurrence Frequency )

- Retina v. Competitors?
- The user should have the ability to change time period.
Important:
- Keep things consistent. This means all graphic styles should work together.
- All of the graphics should have a similar feel and general aesthetic appearance.
Target User:
- Utilities and Grid Operators.
- Municipalities.
- Electricity Traders.
Judging Criteria:
- How well you plan the user experience and capture your ideas visually.
- Cleanliness of your graphics and design.
- Creativity and ease-of-use is key to the success as it must be engaging to users.

Final Fixes
As part of the final fixes phase you may be asked to modify your graphics (sizes or colors) or modify overall colors. We may ask you to update your design or graphics based on checkpoint feedback.
