Challenge Summary

Welcome to the Agon - Analytics Tool UI Design Concepts Challenge! The client for this project has a proprietary analytics tool. They are currently building out a web-based version of this tool. The tool generates a series of visualizations and maps dynamicly depending on what is being filtered. In addition to these visualizations, an important part of our analytic tool is what the client refers to as a “TV Remote” that allows users to navigate through the data. To filter data, the tool uses structured natural language queries. By stacking multiple of these queries, users can filter the data, on which visualizations are created. This “TV Remote” is what we will be focusing on for this challenge.

We look forward to seeing your creative UI ideas!

Round 1

Submit your design for a Checkpoint feedback
- We would like to review your suggested design concept for everything under deliverables and provide feedback.
- If you have time - please provide us with a click map for your design.
- Readme.jpg : Provide notes about your submission.
- Make sure all pages have correct flow! Use correct file numbering. (00, 01, 02, 03).

Round 2

Final Design plus Checkpoint feedback
- Your final design.
- If you have time - please provide us with a click map for your design.
- Readme.jpg : Provide notes about your submission.
- Make sure all pages have correct flow! Use correct file numbering. (00, 01, 02, 03).

Project Background
Agon have an analytics tool that provides a filter focused UI and visualizations that map funding processes. The solution is a Windows desktop application that is being converted to become more web-based in a separate stream of work.

The client is currently building a web front-end for their analytics tool. In the final version it should have dashboard-like behavior, as it should be able to place multiple visualizations of the same dataset on a single screen.

Design Requirements:
- Desktop Resolution: 1280 x 800px at 72dpi (length can extend to fit your designs)
- The main goal in this challenge is to revamp the design and UX of the existing filters.

Supporting Documents:
- Agon User Flow (Agon User Flow.pdf)
- Agon Inspiration (Agon Inspiration.docx)
- General Branding Guidance (General Branding Guidance.pdf)

Challenge Overview
For this challenge we are focusing on this filtering (TV Remote) part of the UI. For the first version we are looking for an interface which shows the following 3 components (not necessarily at the same time):
A component to define new filters. Filters are selected from a pre-defined set and can be configured with a set of parameters, specific to each filter.
- A list of all applied filters, including an indicator showing some key metrics of the dataset still in scope after each filter
A small view with about 6 key metrics about the current scope; we are referring here to the metrics in the top left under Content Summary (Apollo User Flow.pdf).

Interoperability of the components with other components and/or the visualizations is not part of the challenge.

Deliverables
We’ve pulled out some key panels and areas of the current UI that we would like you focus on. We are looking to make the UI and UX as user friendly as possible. The main pain point of the current UI is the idea of these flyout panels. The content within these panels have really long titles and there are a lot of choices. The client is also using a Natural Language input method (which they want to keep). This is very important and should be a focus on your new concepts and UI ideas. This needs to function better than it already is. We’ve made a User Flow document that we would like you to work from when creating your designs. Things that we would like to see in your submissions:

  • Handling and improvement on the Left Panel (this also doesn’t need remain a left panel. If there is some other method or placement of this we are open to your ideas)
  • Creating filters
  • Natural Language input (very important that we keep this and elevate it into a main feature of the application). Example: Inside Pattern top/bottom refinement you can see natural language input “Keep the top 3 patterns based on total amount “, Where underlined = variables that feed the filters.
  • Making selections within the Natural Language input. Specifically with regards to Range selections (outlined in the User Flow document)
  • Overall UI improvement.
  • General Look and Feel.
  • Your Ideas and Concepts!

Target Audience:
- The design should appeal to Agon Strategy Consultants.  These folks are not data scientists but generally well-versed in Microsoft office type data manipulation.

Judging Criteria
- How well does your design align with the objectives of the challenge
- Cleanliness of your graphics and design.
- Overall Design and User Experience.
- Overall UI improvement.
- General Look and Feel.
- Your Ideas and Concepts!
