Challenge Summary

Welcome to IBM Datalake Mobile Catalog Tool Design Concepts Challenge. In this challenge, we are looking for your mobile design concepts and visual ideas for how a user will experience the Data Catalog Tool.

We currently have a desktop version of the Datalake application but we are looking for your mobile solution and how the Datalake search, results and data visualizations will work on a mobile device.

Focus on creating a simple and engaging mobile experience. Make sure to embrace the IBM Design Language when planning your solution.

Good luck on this challenge!

Challenge Description:
In this challenge we are looking for your experience concepts on how to design the mobile Datalake Catalog Tool. The Datalake Catalog contains business terms and metadata from various different data sources. A user is able to go into the tool and search for specific terms and see the definition of the term, related data points about that term and where the term might live within an application.

Design Expectations:
- This application needs to be easy to use and navigate!
- We need the ability to collapse and expand my view when there is too much information presented.
- How does the data collapse within the mobile space?
- If I find a term and it has many connections - how do I drill into the term on mobile?
- Keep things consistent. This means all graphic styles should work together
- All graphics should have a similar feel and general aesthetic appearance
- We are targeting mobile devices with this app - for this challenge, focus on iPhone 6 portrait (750 x 1334px)

User Story:
John is working for a large enterprise. He is tasked with creating a report about a dataset that he never dealt with, he is confused on how/where to begin. He turns to the Datalake tool to look up terms and find information and data about the terms that he is unfamiliar with.

Within Datalake, he finds a glossary of terms and is able to quickly search to find the definition of the term which he needs more information on. He then initiates a search to find a particular data-set, and receives a list of databases that contain that search result. Within the results he chooses one data-set to explore further. Within this data, he can see connections within the data, the flow of the data throughout the database and “transformations” that have happened within the data set over time. If he chooses, he can view the raw data and see where the term “originated” from.

Once into the data-set details, he is able to:
- View data source, the transformations, SQL queries, an English description/summary of the transformation logic, and SME (Subject Matter Expert) contact for all data”, these details help him understand if the data is in it's raw format or has been processed or manipulated before it reaches a particular database.
- Subscribe to a data-set. He will get a notification when the data has been updated.
- Find information about the date/time the data was last refreshed!
- View and monitor people’s activity around the data.
- View the users who had already subscribed for this data-set and follow them

Required Screens:
Based on the user story and provided wireframes create the mobile experience. The provided list of screens are suggestion. If there is addition screens that you think would improve the application, please feel free to expand on this list.

0) Navigation:
- See the wireframe features
- Note: The wireframe is talking specifically about marketing terms but this could used for any type of terminology search
- Main items in the navigation includes a way to browse the terms or browse the data models
- We also have an overall search - so how do these items work on mobile

1) Login:
We need a way for the users to login.
- Come up with ideas on what is required for this screen!

2) Home Screen:
See desktop screen DataLake-01.jpg
- This is the key screen once a user logs in
- The user needs to be able to quickly search and find terms
- They can search based on terms, data model or both
- Provide the ability to search through the available database tables, columns and glossary terms - so they can find what they are looking for!
- Provide an auto-complete feature for search terms
- While keeping the home simple what else is needed here? Recent searches? Saved terms?

3) Search Results:
See desktop screen DataLake-02.jpg
- Users will be able to search through an increasing amount of material which could include databases, sample SQL queries, etc.
- How will the auto-complete feature look like in the mobile? show this in your designs.
- As there are large amount of material, we need options to filter results in the search results page.
- Search results will include glossary terms, tables, logical schema etc..we need to display the Item type, Name, origin and description.
- On mobile how will a user drill into a result?
- From the search results, user will be able to go to details screen (Screen 4).

4) Browse Glossary Terms / Data Model:
- This screen will be accessed from either home screen or from main navigation, they will either select “Browse Glossary Terms or Browse Data Model” and reach this screen.
- This needs to show a list of browse options for the user (these options are shown in the left side navigation in the desktop version), how can we plan this for the mobile version - show your ideas.
- Selecting an option will show more details about the selected item.
- We need an integrated search that allows user to search within the list of glossary terms or data models!

5) Glossary / Data Model Details:
- Each dataset will contain the source data, the transformations, SQL queries, an English description/summary of the transformation logic, and SME (Subject Matter Expert) contact for all data, so that users can understand if the data is in it's raw format or has been processed or manipulated before it’s reached a particular database.
- Provide an option for the user to subscribe to the business term.
- Show the date/time the data was last refreshed.
- We need the ability for the user to see the logical data schema, the physical table views and columns. (see PPT pg#6)
- He should be able to see full end-to-end refresh cycle of all data in selected database, so that I can understand and clearly communicate to my stakeholders the freshness of the data in my dashboards, models, or applications. This will allow users to see the frequency which the data has been kept updated.
- We would like to have the option to monitor other people's activity around data (follow people and their data sets) to learn what sources, and tables they have used in order to establish if the data has been reused and to reduce my time to gaining insights for preparing data for a project. This is a nice to have social aspect, as this information shows that the data is very accurate because: many other people have used this data, we have information that it was last refreshed on a particular date, and there are many other people who are subscribing to this data.
-When a user has found data they would like to utilize, users will be able to export the data to other formats: pdf, etc.

Design considerations:
- Displaying data models on mobile could prove difficult. We have an example of a data model in the attached powerpoint and would like you to search for solutions.
- Is it possible to build an experience around viewing data models on mobile?
- Should we export the data for viewing elsewhere, desktop, tablet--larger screens?

We are looking for your solutions!

Target Audience:
IBM Employees
