Challenge Summary
Welcome to GE Pivot Podcast Open Innovation Ideation Challege. GE is leading the Industrial Internet revolution. Our converged futures will be an artful blend of the physical and digital worlds, providing humanity with enhanced products and services in every industry, touching all walks of life.
In a 2-part Open Innovation series, GE is seeking two key deliverables that will tie back into their semi-fictional, groundbreaking Podcast - Pivot. In their podcast series, 2 characters - Ethan and Sam - are looking for the ultimate technological ‘mash-up’ of a wearable device and an autonomous drone. (For this challenge you need to listen to the Pivot podcasts!).
GE would like the Topcoder community to begin the front-end innovation process by first thinking through the art of the possible with an Ideation challenge. The second challenge will focus on designing the winning idea/concept!
Important Rule Challenge for all Ideation Challenges
You are allowed to submit your ideas at any time during this challenge. You are also allowed to submit to the final phase even if you did not submit to the checkpoint phase. All ideation submissions will be accepted (that pass screening). Note: while we are allowing this challenge to be "open" we do recommend you submit to the checkpoint so we can review and provide valuable feedback. Good luck!
Round 1
Submit your idea deliverables.
Round 2
Submit your idea deliverables plus feedback from client.
Additional GE Challenge Rules:
- Please refer to GE Official Rules applicable to this challenge.
- To the extent there is any conflict between these Official Rules and additional Topcoder Terms and Conditions of Use referenced of the Website, these Official Rules govern.
- 1st through 5th Place winners from this challenge need print, sign and send back to us the IP Rights document from GE before eligible for the prizes.
Challenge Details
In this challenge GE is asking the Topcoder community to ideate on application concepts that blend wearable devices and drones. You will need to listen to the two current Pivot podcasts (with #3 due out Tues. 9/15/15), learn about the situation and see what ideas you have for the wearable device they can use within their story!
This is an Open Innovation exercise to explore the art of the possible.
To provide guidance without restricting creativity we are suggesting you concentrate on these specific technology areas:
1. The wearable device - Bluetooth Low Energy, Apple iBeacon, NFC, GPS, Google Eddystone - which technologies are employed, and why? Reference article: Eddystone v. iBeacon
2. The drone - what capabilities does this drone have? Built-in Camera, audio, visual display screen, and/or sensor capability. It must be kept out of the realm of science fiction and be grounded in today’s capabilities OR something an avid hacker/tinkerer could produce - Google Search
3. Passive (aka frictionless) Identity Management - In this application the drone must interact with the wearable, and therefore the human. To do so effectively, we must consider security and identity. For a drone application to be believable, security and identity must be addressed. Examples:
-- Brivo - SAM API (Social Access Management) - video here
-- Forgerock Identity and Access Management APIs - here
In general, we want to make sure that we encourage you to come up with completely creative solutions. Nothing too consumer-focused, think industrial solutions -- for industrial machines, workplaces, processes, products, etc. Your idea can either follow the current Podcast story or change it! You are allowed to have an idea where we can morph it into our future Podcasts!
Challenge Objective
New ideas! Wearable + drone application ideas! Creative and engaging ideas! Industrial application ideas!
Embrace the Story (Podcasts)
You are REQUIRED to dig into the storyline. The Pivot website offers two podcasts you need to listen and follow (Number 3 will be available on Tuesday 9/15/15). Your idea is not restricted to what is in the podcast, you can adjust the story to incorporate your idea, that is why it is necessary you pay attention to the podcasts (there are attached scripts in case you want to read or have trouble with listening).
Episode 01 Brief
- When a major earthquake hits the Bay Area, Ethan, a software developer, goes on a life-saving mission - and takes the Industrial Internet with him.
- Download Episode 01.
Episode 02 Brief
- Meet Sam, an earnest and hardworking developer at AT&T, based out of San Francisco and specializing in drones. When he learns the earthquake has trapped his younger sister Hannah under a collapsed building, he brings along his search-and-rescue drone app to help save her life.
- Download Episode 02.
Attention! The winner has the opportunity (along with the prize) to participate in a future podcast about their idea.
Deliverables
We are looking for ideas - but we also need a structure to your ideas so we can understand them and make it easier when reviewing.
1) Idea: High level overview/statement of the idea: one or two sentences describing your idea.
2) Name: Application name and any "tagline" you would like to associate with your idea
3) The User Story: This is critical. 2-3 paragraphs of what the application accomplishes, the main benefits an industrial user will experience and in what industrial situations would the user want to use the application. Think of the current Podcast and explain how your idea would fit into the flow.
4) Key Feature Sets: Also critical - since your concept is truly a mash-up between digital and physical solution we need you to pinpoint key features an industrial user would engage. We also require the you to describe what the features enable in terms of provided service, ease of use, etc … (Think Geolocation, Voice Command, Mobile Photography, Security, Payments, Mobile Health Data)
5) Details: Any sketches, wireframes or designs/images to better explain and pitch your idea.
6) Pitch: Imagine trying to sell your idea - look to present your solution in a professional manner/package.
7) Video: Optional: It would be great if you can verbally explain your app via video. Your video can be shot on a mobile device or webcam to keep this as easy as possible.
Important Note: Although there is no limit to number of submissions you can upload, you should only upload multiple submissions if each one is substantially different from your others. Within these constraints, you are free to describe any number of alternative approaches and extra features. In fact, we encourage you to do so. You can't have too many ideas.
