Challenge Summary
Welcome to the Dinnaco Time Tracker Desktop App Design Challenge.
In this challenge we are looking for your concepts and ideas on how to design a Windows 7+ desktop application to track time. The application will enable employees to record their working time in a more efficient and accurate manner throughout the day, rather than from memory at the end of the 2 week timesheet period.
Round 1
Submit your design for a Checkpoint feedback:
- Submit your initial designs for Checkpoint Feedback
- If you have time - please provide us with a click map for your design.
- Readme.jpg : Provide notes about your submission.
- Make sure all pages have correct flow! Use correct file numbering. (00, 01, 02, 03).
Round 2
Final Design plus Checkpoint feedback:
- Your Final designs for all the required designs with all Checkpoint Feedback implemented.
- If you have time - please provide us with a click map for your design.

Challenge Description:
Dinnaco is looking for a simple and intuitive time tracking application that works on Windows 7+ desktops. It is envisaged that a small pop-up / fade-in window will appear on users’ desktops to allow them to record their work on different jobs by either starting a timer against a specific job, or by clicking on a range of “30mins, 1 hr, 2hrs, etc.” style of buttons that will record a block of time against that job. The ability to refine those numbers and edit time is also critical. Some staff members bill on 6 minute increments, so your solution needs to account for this. Maybe it’s a custom time setting that the user can save for later use. The user also needs to the ability to add a note against a task. For example: preparation for workshop or attended meeting or prepared document for XYZ.
The application will record and summarise the time against each job and import this into the user’s SAP timesheet system allowing the user to review / tweak entries before final submission. It will also pull recently used job codes from SAP to allow the jobs shown in the application to be customized and relevant. Also think about how pop-ups and/ or reminders would work. Examples could be: Reminder/ popup at the end of the day to record time or a reminder/popup at mid-month or end-month to record your time.
We acknowledge many similar applications on the market which run in separate windows, but the key difference in this project is the simplicity and ease of use of the interface – e.g. possible options could include using screen hotspots or keyboard shortcuts to fade-in the application, and the link with SAP that shows the user's’ recent, common and/ or favorite jobs and submission of time data.
Screen Dimensions:
We do not have set screen dimensions since this will be a Windows desktop app. With that said, this should work within a 1920 by 1080px screen size. However, think about widgets or smaller panels to make logging time faster and easier. A “full screen” option might be nice, but think small first and give us options to view larger if needed/ wanted.
Required Screens/ Functionality:
The widget/ app should be able to do the follow items. These items don’t necessarily have to translate into separate screens. These could be different sections, panels, views, etc. We are looking for your ideas on how to best organize and achieve the desired functionality and data views.
- Simple and intuitive to use.
- Pulling recent job codes and uploading timesheet data.
- Customisable by the user to include different jobs (i.e. favourites, recent, etc.).
- Smart features to recognise when the user is performing certain tasks:
-- E.g. recognising diary appointments from Outlook and giving the choice to the user of which project to assign these to.
-- Customisable working day times, lunch breaks, etc
- Main screen is the small pop-up/fade-in window. Additional settings or reports window to be accessible to view detail of time recorded and perform administration (i.e. sort items, change times, edit project names, reset counters, change layout and buttons configurations, change settings, request upload to SAP timesheet, etc.
- Starting a timer against a specific job, or by clicking on a range of “time” buttons.
- Add a note against a task.
Branding:
Refer to the Design Direction Site.
Design Direction Site:
We’ve included a Design Direction Site to help get you started. This includes branding information, inspiration and any additional direction, examples and/or input. This will become your single source, outside of the challenge description, for information and assets.
Windows Design Basics:
This serves as a good base level understanding of designing Windows apps if you are unfamiliar. You do not necessarily have to follow all of these guidelines, but it would be good to make sure you are following the general structure of a Windows app. Your app should still look like Dinnaco and follow those branding guidelines.

Target Audience:
Employees who are responsible for recording their own working time against a range of different jobs using the Firm’s SAP timesheet system.
Judging Criteria:
- How well you plan the user experience and capture your ideas visually.
- Cleanliness of your graphics and design.
- Overall design, UI and user experience
