Configurator Idea Generation Contest

Welcome to the Vehicle Configurator Idea Generation contest. As part of this contest, we need your help to propose an alternative to our client’s existing configurator tool which allows them to configure a vehicle using a set of predefined business rules.

 

IMPORTANT: This is an Idea Generation contest. You are not expected to submit any code for this contest. The only deliverables for this contest are a word document which describes your proposal in detail.

Contest Background

Our client has dealers with sales outlets worldwide and they sell vehicles that can be extensively customized to suit their customer's needs. At the core of their business is a third party application named the configurator. This is a third party proprietary application that helps our client’s employees analyze the thousands of choices that make up a vehicle’s configuration to determine the current state of that configuration.

 

Contest Objectives

1. Suggest an alternative to the existing configurator

2. The proposed configurator should allow our client to create a data set describing the different vehicles, the configurations possible for these vehicles, the different attributes for these configurations and the business rules associated with them

3. The proposed configurator should be able to instantly react to changes to an existing vehicle configuration to execute business rules in the order of thousands in as short of a time as possible and output the updated vehicle configuration with any obsolete or invalid configurations clearly mentioned.

 

Contest Requirements

We will share a detailed requirements document with you about the configurator and other aspects of the current process. This will be made available in the contest forum.

 

Software Types

As part of your proposal for the type of software to replace the configurator, we are open to the following types:

1. Open source configurator solutions

2. Open source BRE solutions

3. Any open source software that fits our requirements

 

IMPORTANT: We assume it will be impossible to find an open source alternative that will fit 100% of the requirements. We are open to any solution that meets some of the requirements off the shelf, but that would involve some level of customization (with full access to the source code).
