Challenge Summary

Welcome to the "On Wheels – Travel experience App Enhancement Design Challenge! In this exciting challenge we’re looking to design new functionalities for the existing On Wheels app. On Wheels is an innovative mobile app that redefines accessibility in an urban environment for wheelchair users. In this challenge we’re looking for your designs to expand the existing app functionality of Roll Routes to (1) allow app users to create, share and interact with Roll Routes and (2) to allow app users to plan & experience end-2-end travels by connecting them to relevant service providers.  An example of an end-2-end experience could be: I’m Mr X, my wife is in a wheelchair, I would like to organise a city trip in Ghent for her and would like to have the best experience possible. I would like to be able to create this travel experience and be able to interact with different service providers to optimise the experience offered to my wife e.g. at the airport, taking the bus, going to the restaurant, walking in the street, visiting museum, etc. …).

Round 1

Updated On Wheels Screens (iOS only), including the following new functionality:
01. Roll Routes extension
02. Extended travel experience

Round 2

Updated On Wheels Screens (iOS + Android), including the following new functionality:
01. Roll Routes extension
02. Extended travel experience

In this challenge, we’re looking for you to design how the new functionality can be seamlessly incorporated into the existing On Wheels app. What should the user see and experience when using the new features in the application? How can the new functionality fit into the app so existing users can intuitively use it? We’re looking for your creative designs to answer these questions and add the new functionality into the On Wheels app!

Project Background
On Wheels is an innovative mobile app (iOS and Android) that redefines accessibility in an urban environment for wheelchair users. A handy map shows you a wide range of practical information like the location of restaurants, bars, museums, toilets, shops, parking spots and pharmacies. A key element is the personal aspect. Every wheelchair user is unique in what he or she can do and the size of their chair. Based on your personal settings, the width of your wheelchair and the height of the doorstep you can take, this app will show you all the locations you can easily access.

One of the functionalities currently developed is the Roll Routes functionality, which allows users to browse through wheelchair accessible city walks, provided by the app.  This app is a first step to make the On Wheels app the ideal travel companion for Wheelchair users

1)    Floraliën route – this is for a private event –  an example of how private organizations could get involved

2)    Gent City Culture route – an example of how cities can get involved

Project Goals
The goal of this project is to expand the functionality of the existing On Wheels application.  Specifically, we are looking to add functionality that allows people create and share “Roll Routes” in cities so users of the app can view these accessible walks. We’d also like to explore possibilities to connect Wheelchair users with key actors of the industry to allow the app to become the ideal travel companion delivering an end-2-end experience.

Overall design goal: How can we make the On Wheels app the ideal tool to choose, plan, experience and share city trips accessible for wheelchair users?

App Enhancements - Key Features to Add
Roll Routes extension
- Allow people to link accessible locations to create/record and share “Roll routes”
- Allow people to search/view/experience/rate/interact with the “Roll Routes”

Extended travel experience
- Define interaction points with the industry to allow wheelchair users to plan trips end-2-end by interacting with service providers (e.g. airports, public/private transport, hotels, …).

Screen Requirements:
- For this challenge, we are looking for you to expand on the existing On Wheels screens. You may add new screens for the new functionality, and you should also update the existing screens to support the new functionality / any new screens you add.
- Feel free to be creative with your design concept ideas! We’re looking for an intuitive user experience with the new functionality.

Key Requirements
01. Roll Routes extension
- Design the functionality to let people create and share “Roll routes” in cities.
- Users of the app should be able to easily search/view/experience/rate/interact these “Roll routes”.
- There should be at least one new screen focused on “Roll routes”

02. Extended travel experience
- Extend the “Roll routes” functionality to enable app users to interact with a key actor in the leisure industry
- There should be at least one new screen focused on the delivery of a new service building upon the “Roll routes” functionality.

IMPORTANT
- Keep things consistent. This means all graphic styles should work together.
- All of the graphics should have a similar feel and general aesthetic appearance.

Design Considerations:
- The interface needs to be clean, modern, easy and intuitive to navigate.
- Ideally the focus should be a fluid user experience, especially for .
- Focus on the design being a great user experience, think simple but effective solutions!
- Give importance to the overall layout and think on how a user would interact with the content on the page.
- Show all the screens and provide a user flow/click-path and navigation, so we can see how the interactions fit together in the application
- Apply the KISS principle (keep it simple), while it’s an app for on the go.
- Use native components (iOS and Android) in your design people are used to in other apps. Our goal is to make the app more and more native.
- Be consistent in your design. Think for holistic solutions that you can apply on different elements.
- Think about readability and test your contrasts and negative spaces on different devices.
- Keep in mind that our target group are people in wheelchairs. Some of this target group have more issues than with their legs. So make this app very accessible for a large group of them.
- Think about interaction design as well. Show us how the transitions and animations would behave between elements and/or screens in a clickable prototype or via a user flow.
- Follow the existing branding that is already applied on the app. Knowing that our category screen will change, while it’s not future proof with all new categories coming. We will work with Category families like on Google Maps and Apple Maps.
- Don’t only design the ideal situation. Stress test your designs with worst case scenarios.

Create it as a mobile design:
