Challenge Summary
Welcome to Living Progress - MoBy Maternal Health - Mobile App Wireframe Challenge!
This project aims at creating a mobile application that helps improve the maternal and neonatal health service delivery and health outcomes. We are looking for wireframe (axure) solutions based on requirements from our client. We’re also looking to the community to come up with interesting ideas for the workflow - we’re absolutely open to creative solutions!
At the end of this wireframe challenge, we are looking to have a complete solution for the user experience and flow of the application.
This challenge is part of the HPE Living Progress Challenge Blitz Program (Secure top placements in the leaderboard to grab addiitional cash prizes)

This mobile application will consists of private chat groups and group educational messaging anchored to health facilities and systems providing antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care.
Problem (Social Issue):
Globally, approximately 300,000 women die of pregnancy-related complications annually, over 2 million babies die within their first week of life, and a similar number are stillborn each year. There remain large gaps in quality and continuity of facility-based care particularly in the postnatal period, with half of mothers in Kenya reporting receiving no postnatal care within the highest risk 48 hours after childbirth. Even among women who receive facility-based care, many delay postnatal care seeking.
While a multitude of factors can contribute to complications in pregnancy and childbirth, a significant body of research links maternal stress to adverse pregnancy outcomes, including a number of studies in which women with high self-reported psychosocial stress had a 25-60 percent increased risk of preterm birth as compared to women with low stress.
- Globally, people with social support report better health
- Social support increases resilience to stress, and group care models that help build social support could impact health outcomes.
- A group model of antenatal care (ANC) education program has demonstrated improved pregnancy outcomes and patient satisfaction in the U.S.
- In a multi-site randomized control trial, group ANC reduced preterm birth rates by 33 percent.
But these in-person group ANC remains limited in most settings since it is non-traditional and therefore complex to implement in places where individual ANC models are entrenched. We see mobile technology as a low-cost, accessible way to achieve the benefits of in-person group ANC, but to do it at scale.
Proposed Solution:
Aim is to develop and test a mobile private chat group service to improve maternal and neonatal health service delivery and health outcomes. The service consists of private chat groups and group educational messaging anchored to health facilities and systems providing antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care.
MoBy (name derived from ‘Mother-Baby’) is designed to improve outcomes, quality of care, and satisfaction through linking the power of social networking to maternal health systems. Similar to the concept of group antenatal care, we aim for this application to enable women to build social support in pregnancy and postpartum. Upon initiation of ANC, women will have the option to join private mobile chat-groups of up to 12 women with a similar gestational age of pregnancy. The groups will not be time-bound, so group interaction can continue through postpartum and early parenting, when social support could be critical for breastfeeding, newborn care, and postpartum mood changes. The chat groups will be integrated with an automated messaging platform that sends key informational messages and general reminders to the group. This app will have a more powerful impact on patient education and behavior. We hope to add and test an innovative feature to educational text messaging to make it more patient-centered: using behavioral targeting tools (normally used for consumer advertising) to send targeted educational health messaging to groups. For example, if a virtual chat group mentions “folic acid” for the first time in their conversation, a standard message on use of folic acid in pregnancy is sent to the group.
Wireframe Expectations:
- You must create traditional wireframe call-outs and notes
- Provide us with your interaction and click-path thoughts and suggestions
- The mobile application must be very easy to use and intuitive. Keep that in mind when create your solution for the layout and flow information.
- We are focussing on android mobiles, have your wireframes with the aspect ratio of 16:9, portrait (For example: 360 x 640px, 640px width by 1136px, etc... Note: height can expand based on content)
Suggested Screens:
Below are some of the suggested screens, please feel free to expand on the concepts given below and add any number of screens as required.
01 Registration:
- Once a woman establishes care at a maternal health clinic, they receive a message to download the app along with a passcode.
- First thing after downloading the app, they enter the passcode in app
- Once passcode is confirmed, we display the terms of privacy agreement for them to accept (NOTE: Until they accept the terms, they won’t be able to move to next step)
-Each passcode will be unique to a facility. A facility admin will use the Admin Tool to generate a passcode. That passcode will then be used to identify which user belongs to which facility.
- On accepting terms, they will see a form to select their due date and select their health facility.
- After completing above steps, they will automatically join a chat group.
02 Virtual Support Groups:
- These Virtual Support groups are limited to only 10 per group and a user can be part of only one virtual group.
-Groups should be grouped together based on month of due date & facility.
- A group is assigned on the basis of first in/first out, a user automatically joins a chat group based on the month of EDD (Estimated Due date). For example, once a July EDD group fills to 10, then the next person gets pushed to a second july chat group "july group 2" - women can change their own group name.
- Within the group, each woman can engage other ANC moms in her group by sending text messages to each other in a group similar to WhatsApp chat groups.
- The goal of the groups is to build social support systems among individuals going through a shared experience, reflecting the core concept of group antenatal care. We hope to see similar improvements in pregnancy outcomes, follow-up rates, and satisfaction with care.
- There will be option to receive educational messages from admin.
- Note: Educational messages need to be shown under the “admin username” probably in a different font..looking for your ideas on how to show a difference between a normal chat message and an educational message?
- Users can address the admin by typing “@admin” before their question/comment. Admin should be notified via email of the update.
- We have attached the list of the messages (excel file) that will be sent during their prenatal and postnatal period (Feel free to use these messages as required in your wireframes).
03 Group Settings:
- User should be able to view list of other users in the group.
- What other options need to be shown to make it more interactive?
- They should be able to change their group name.
- We are looking for your ideas on what else need to be shown?
04 Support / Ask questions:
- We need a screen that provides the ability for the user to ask questions.
- These questions will be treated as non-emergent questions and expect the health facility to answer their question within 24 hours (separate chat to admin).
- How different should this be from that of the chat groups? looking forward to your thoughts.
- We need way for user to receive patient specific messages, admin’s can send patient specific messages - for example: next visit reminders, etc.
05 Chalkboard:
- Access health information that is specific to the facility, like facility information (i.e. emergency contact numbers) or links to brochures relating to patient educational material (i.e. family planning options, Care after Caesarean Section, etc - few example brochures attached) in a "chalkboard"
- Provide an option to search..this will be really help when a user tries to search for information on a particular health issue!
- Looking forward to your thoughts on how best this can be shown used?
Overall thoughts for features:
- Notifications would be helpful for this application, looking forward to your thoughts on how it can be shown?
- Feel free to show us your ideas on what options need to be shown in this group based chat interface.
