Challenge Summary
Welcome to the GE - OneHR Portal UI Design Concepts Challenge! In this challenge, we are looking to rethink, redesign and reimagine the GE employee experience. We are rethinking how we do things at GE and listening and learning from our employees on what matters most to them. This challenge is focused on new "design concepts" for our OneHR portal. We want to make sure employees are able to quickly find the right level of information, in the right context, at the right time, on the right device.
This is a rethinking of the OneHR portal, and with this redesign, we are not looking for just a new “employee portal” but to continue to be an industry leader in the employee experience!
Good luck and we look forward to your design concepts!

Challenge Description:
What is OneHR?
OneHR is a human resources portal that has three user views:
1) Employee View
2) Manager View
3) HR Support View
This project addresses the Employee view. Which is global, available to 300,000 employees in 200+ countries and in many languages. 43 distinct portals exist (some are regional and can be viewed by multiple countries). The portal is mobile responsive, available anywhere, anytime, any device!

GE Brand Core Guidelines: You will need to follow GE Brand Core Guidelines (Sketch File, PDF, Fonts)
Persona & Screen Reference: Project Background, Navigation, Persona and Data Information Available PDF's
The Problem:
Within the Employee View of the portal, we have multiple tools with different “slices” of personalized information and data that employees use to manage their work, life, and benefits. Having multiple tools has led to an inconsistent experience that employees say is difficult to navigate. We are not sure how to bring it all together in a meaningful view that is easy to use and allows for multiple paths to take action and understand all they have as a GE employee.
Solution - OneHR Portal Employee View Reimagined:
We want to stop and conceptualize what the future employee experience as a part of the continuation of the GE evolution to enable and empower the employee with actionable information, predicting what they need when they need it, giving them what they need to control their success in career and easy access to the key essentials for taking care of themselves and their families today and in the future. We need to bring the multiple slices of data and information to tell a single story depending on what they are trying to do or learn and consider how we can use it in a predictive way, without crossing the cool/creepy line.
Learnings from Employees (expectations):
Findability: "I don’t want to take forever to find information."
Personalized: "I want to see information that pertains to me."
Contact Info: "If am stuck, give me a way to reach out for help."
Missed opportunities: "Based on what I have today, I want to understand my options and what else I can do."
Readability: "I am turned off by all the words on this page. I won’t even read it."
Context: "I don’t understand when I am supposed to use each tool. Give me the information I need in the context of what I’m doing at the time."
Expectations: "I want to know where my click will take me before I click."
Challenge Concepts and Screens
Challenge Persona: Sally
See Persona.pdf
- Read about our user
- Plan for her experience!
Navigation:
See Navigation.pdf
See Data-Information-Available.pdf
- Review our current navigation and categorization.
- Current Structure: Review page (1) to understand the current structure and how it is not consistent.
- Recommendations: Review page (2-3) for potential navigation hierarchy.
- Think through these options and where the fit into your user experience.
- How should this information be broken down (ease-of-use) for this user?
My Compensation:
Use Case A
Sally just received an increase in pay, and she wants to check what the impact is to her current paycheck. While she is in the Portal, she decides to explore what her total compensation will end up being. She also sees a suggestion that maybe she would like to increase her contributions to retirement since she has received a salary increase which would also increase the company match. (missed opportunity) She starts to explore adding more to her 401k and what the impact would be to her paycheck in the future. She also wants to understand if she added 1% in her contributions how much would that grow to in the future.
Data to display:
- See Data-Information-Available.pdf to understand the information that will be displayed
- This crosses two categories Compensation and Benefits, sub-category Retirement
- Note: While all this data is available, different employees receive different types of pay. Not all of this would display for each person.
Actions I can take (not all inclusive) :
- Update my direct deposit
- Log my time and attendance
- Defer my incentive pay
Note: these are not the actions you would take in the Use Case A scenario…. this challenge is to capture more of the realistic interactions/views Sally will see (based on what she and others frequently WANT to do).
My Benefits:
Use Case B
Sally’s son has an asthma attack and needs to find an urgent care facility that is covered by her insurance.
Data to display:
- See Data-Information-Available.pdf to understand the information that will be displayed
- We can see the list of information that will be displayed.
- Make it simple for users to understand the benefits specific to them and their family
- This will include the subcategories Retirement, Healthcare, Income protection, discount
Actions I can take (not all inclusive)
- Elect/change my benefits
- Change my retirement elections
- Update my beneficiaries
- Elect to receive my benefits communications through email
My Life:
Use Case C

- This is a cross-over across the whole 5 categories to see her total set of offerings from GE (What would I lose out on if I left the company? Would a new company offer me all this?) as well as more specifically My Career (What other opportunities exist for me in GE?)
Actions I can take (not all inclusive)
