Challenge Summary
What is a RUX Challenge?
The RUX (Rapid User Experience) challenge uses the same format as our famous LUX Challenge except it is not "Live" at an event. The RUX Challenge Series provides you with an opportunity to show digital leaders from some of the largest companies in the world just how good your concept and user experience (UI/UX) design skills are.
RUX (Rapid User Experience) challenges are fast, fun, and have more chances for you to capture prize money!
Note: You do not need to have RUX challenge experience to join this challenge - Just jump in and give it a try! Make sure to follow the challenge details, the challenge forum and ask questions.
Design Problem
Our client is an experimental agricultural company that produces pineapples and cane sugar in Hawaii. They have a series of variables and a large amount of data that they need to visualize on a dashboard to support their research efforts. The client is interested in exploring changes in their productivity rate (of pineapples and cane sugar), their water production from the field, and their number of producing days as a function of group membership and irrigation choices. All of this should be shown within the context of time (change over time).
The client also needs to be able to compare and contrast different types of visualizations or ways to show the data at once. For example, an interactive map versus some other kind of comparative profile graph. The ultimate goal of the client is to figure out how to optimize production of pineapples and cane sugar so that they can maximize value (make more money) from the field.

- This application is going to be developed as a Desktop Web Application
- Screen Sizes: 1366px wide (height as needed)
- Should have minimal scrolling of the entire screen
Branding
- Colors & Fonts: Open
- This should be a serious/professional looking application
- We are looking for concepts and ideas!
Design Considerations & Requirements
01) Dashboard Requirements
- A single screen/ dashboard with a series of features and functionality based on your concept for the best ways to show the data.
- The user should have the option to display multiple panels AND decide what those panels display: Maps and graphs/charts are preferred, use colors, and know tables are bad
- It's helpful to see the data in multiple ways at once.
- Should show how the variables are adjustable AND what that does to the visualizations
- Location is really important. This means, a map is likely to be required to give the user context; then, the user could ‘drill down’ by “zooming in” to focus on specific areas/samples in the visualization. Data in all relevant visualizations should adjust dynamically during this process.
- We should be able to view details about a location (all found in the variables doc): latitude/longitude, soil, elevation, irrigation, grade, etc.
- Time can be represented as 1 month, 6 months, etc. Some way to see past and future time (timelines, fast forward/rewind, etc.)
- The primary two output variables that are related to the other related variables are: Pineapples_est.mass and cane_est.mass.
- The other variables are considered contextual (i.e., where the plot is located, in what soil, how was the plot prepared, how is it irrigated).
- The visualizations also could include the accumulation/aggregation of the output variables at specific time points (e.g., total production at 3 months, total production by 6 months).
- The visualizations should support user explorations of how the input variables interact and are correlated to each other. Here is an example of one of these matrices.
- We are looking for concepts and ideas to visualize the relationships within such data outside of just reading it in a nested table.
02) Presentation Screen - 1920x1080 (16:9 Ratio)
- In a RUX challenge, this screen is the way to showcase your concept so keep it simple and make it look good!
- If you were walking into a meeting and needed to sell your idea - use this screen to showcase your concept.
03) Any Additional Functionality or Screens
- Show us concepts and ideas for how things could be designed and function.
- We are open and looking for your ideas and UX solutions.
04) UI/UX Interaction(s)
- Make sure you are showing us how things work
- What happens when a user clicks a button, where do they go
- Make sure you are thinking through these interactions and show us your ideas for how they work.
- These things that can/ should be shown as apart of your Marvel Prototype
05) Marvel Prototype
- We need you to upload your file into Marvel App.
- We want to use Marvel App to provide direct and fast feedback! We can also track your design updates and screen versions within Marvel App!
- No additional functionality is required! Just make sure your screen(s) are in the correct viewing order (number them 00, 01, 02, 03, etc.)
- If you do not have access to the Topcoder Marvel App Account please contact tgerring@topcoder.com and fajar.mln@gmail.com
- You must include your Topcoder Marvel App URL within your .Notes file 2) Presentation Screen - 1920x1080 (16:9 Ratio)
- In a RUX challenge, this screen is the way to showcase your concept so keep it simple and make it look good!
- If you were walking into a meeting and needed to sell your idea - use this screen to showcase your concept.
