Challenge Summary

Welcome to the "Goals and Objectives Cascading Design Concepts Challenge". In this challenge, we need your creativity to come up with a design concept for a tool that will enable our client’s employees of all levels to see through the Goals & Objectives (G&O) they and all their colleagues and units have form top to bottom of the organization.

Read the challenge specification carefully and watch the forums for any questions or feedback concerning this challenge. Let us know if you have any questions in the challenge forum!

Challenge Objectives
  • UI design for a desktop web app
  • Understand the problem and come up with a great solution.
  • Desktop screens of 1366px width.

Round 1

Since this is a concept challenge we would like you to showcase your ideas early on, so please try to prepare as many screens and interactions as possible. Don’t forget to add hotspots to your Marvel prototype, in order to let the client try a more realistic experience.

Round 2

Submit your detailed concept based on your ideas incorporated with the checkpoint feedback.
Project Background
  • Our client’s current G&O framework follows a role-based approach where G&O templates are available for standardized roles. Employees can map these or further customize these G&O templates as per their role requirements. Based on some of the industry best practices, our client realized the following gaps in their existing process:
    • Absence of the larger picture: By referring to standardized role-based G&O templates, employees do not get the visibility on the impact they are creating to their manager’s, unit’s or organization’s goals.
    • Lack of transparency: They do not have access to their manager’s or organization’s goals and remain unaware of the contributions made by other teams /leaders in the organization.
    • Visibility to the managers as to how and which G&Os have been taken up by the reportees down the hierarchy.

Objectives of the Proposed Tool
  • To achieve strategic alignment of goals and objectives which enables a sense of collective ownership and mutual trust in employees.
  • Ensuring transparency from the leadership and commitment from the employees by informing employees how they will make an impact on the strategic objectives of the organization.
  • Provide a clear purpose to everyone on the role they are performing. Cascading goals by clearly outlining the responsibilities of each business unit and team members.
  • Cascading should achieve the following purpose: Organisational Objective -> Unit Objective -> Team Objective -> Individual Objective
User Roles
The system has the 3 following user types:
  • Manager: Managers are those employees who have their own teams, other employees to direct. The managers G&Os are divided further to the employees in his team. Managers can set the visibility of their G&Os as well.
  • Employee: All employees have assigned goals and objectives. These goals and objectives add up to a collective goal which is in line with the company’s strategy.
  • Admin: The admin will have the right to set the user permissions - what parts, teams, departments they can see and on the functionality of the tool design

User Story
  • Jack is an employee from XYZ org. He entered his Q3 Goals and Objectives in one of the tools in the company. And then he opens G&O Cascading tool where he can see his goals. Now he wants to see how and whom he contributing through his goal. So he opens the tree view where he is at the bottom level. He can see his goal linked with Kate’s (Jack’s Manager) goal which he associated. He can further see Kate’s goal associated with Bob (Kate’s Manager) and so on. He can see up to CEO level. Jack is in C1 band and in Banking team. He wants to check how his goals associated cross functionally. So he selects a particular goal and he can see other employees in Security team with whom he is sharing the goal. He can also see percentage or measurement criteria of the particular goal. Also he can see his manager’s goal which are public and able to request if it is not allocated.
  • Kate is a Manager in XYZ company. She has 30 reportees under her and she reports to Bob who is her manager. Kate can access the tree view of G&O of her reportees. Kate can drill down to bottom or go up in her hierarchy. Kate have option to set her goals public or private. She also has a heat map view where she can see list of goals and allocated status with her employees. Other functionalities which is applicable to Jack applicable for her too.
  • Steve is an HR admin who can access the portal like a normal user and all the functionality applicable to him. Additionally, he is able to control the cross functional G&O view across the employee bands. He wants to change the G&O settings so he opens the admin settings and turns off view for C1 level and turned on view for C2 level.
Screen Requirements
For this challenge, we are not providing exact screen requirements. You are free to design as many as you like as long as your screens are in line with the flow.

1.Landing Page (Manager & Employee)
The user will need a landing screen where he gets after logging in to the tool.
  • To give the user a quick picture of his progress main metrics would be shown, like number of G&Os, overall progress, number of reportees etc. If the user is a manager, two screens to be visible to him/ her- one as an employee and the other as a manager.
  • Ideally, this screen could show him his own Goals & Objectives as well in a list along with progress, status, reportees. From the dashboard the user can initiate a drill down into the objectives, and also a zoom out to see the bigger picture.
  • We need option to make G&Os public or private for managers. Manger can set his goals public or private. If the manager has 5 goals, out of which he made 3 goals private and 2 goals public. Private goals can be viewed by the employee who associated with that and public goals can be viewed by any employee reporting under him. Also, the employee can request the manager to assign a particular goal which is available and is in public to him.

2.Tree View of G&Os (Manager & Employee)
We are looking for a great idea to show how the largest G&Os broken down into smaller and smaller tasks throughout several levels of the hierarchy. The tool must accommodate this dynamic viewing function. We need to show top down (manager to reportee) as well as bottom up (reportee to manager) views
  • Drill down to lower levels
  • Zoom out to higher level
  • Show/hide cross-functional (Different Units) G&Os. For eg. There are three different units in company like Banking, Securities, and Insurance. All three are contributing to Finance. So manager or employee from Banking can able to see  manager or employee other units whom he shared the goal.
  • Show the contribution of G&O. We’d like to see how you represent this contribution for eg. any statistics like percentage of contribution or some score, in the larger picture they want to use these details as measurement criteria to evaluate their goals.
  • The manager/employee should be able to see how his/her is cascaded upto the nth level and for an employee- how his/ her is contributing to the goals of his/ her manager and so on

3.Heat Map (Manager)
Need to show heat map of the percentage of G&O allocation and achievement. This view will be available to Manager role. They should able to see distribution of goals and allocated status. If it is allocated then they should see the achievement statistics of that particular goal. If it is not allocated, the manager will have an option to see that this goal is unallocated and option to be given to him/ her to allocate to the employee reportees. The maximum goals per person in the other  system is 9. We are open to your ideas on how to represent this view.

4.G&O details
We are open to your suggestions for how to show the G&O details. It could be an individual page, a popup or any innovative idea that will show all the different data and information, like the following
  • Basic data: title, description, measurement criteria, deadline
  • Assignees, responsibilities, progress
  • Relations to other G&Os, dependencies
  • If possible show flows, dependencies, responsibilities visually

5.HR Settings (Admin)
HR employees should be able to access all functionality of tools and additionally also they should able to provide restrictions on the bands (For eg. B1, B2, B3, C1, C2, D1, D2 and E) having access to cross functional G&Os. For eg. If admins enables cross functional G&O for C1, then all the employees, managers who are C1 level can able to access cross functional G&O.

Out of Scope
The goals and objectives will be created and assigned to the employees in another systeem, which is not in scope.
