Challenge Overview
NOTE: TO JOIN THE CHALLENGE YOU MUST BE COMMITTED TO ATTEND TCO19 IN PERSON ON NOVEMBER 13-16, IN HOUSTON-TX
Context
Producing hydrocarbons from deep-water reservoirs is nothing short of a technological marvel. Safe and efficient operations of production platforms and subsea systems are of prime importance for Shell. These systems are highly instrumented, collecting thousands of parameters every second at each platform for ensuring monitoring, reliability and optimal operations. To use this data is a unique opportunity to apply the latest methods in Artificial Intelligence to generate insights.
Challenge summary
Occasionally, a piece of equipment in a production subsea system can operate abnormally. The ability to predict this abnormal operation is valuable, so that it can be mitigated or avoided. In order to make accurate predictions, it is critical to identify the operating conditions and patterns that preceed it.
The objective of this challenge is for the competing startup companies or teams to use the data available to predict the variables of interest that will define the onset of abnormal behavior as far in advance as possible (Fig.1).
A successful startup company or team will demonstrate that it can:
1. Define an event using target variable y with a given threshold.
2. Identify the most plausible features from a set of input variables for abnormal event causation.
3. Use input features to predict y sufficiently early to be able to predict the onset of abnormal behavior.
Judging Criteria
The results presented by the groups will be judged mainly by following criteria:
1. How accurate is the prediction of the occurrence of abnormal events?
2. How far in advance is the abnormal event prediction?
3. What are leading indicators and potential causes of the abnormal event?
4. Pitch presentation
When criteria 1 and 2 are met, the algorithm that can predict the most beginning/onset of events will be the winning one. If algorithm fails to catch the beginning trend of an event, it will be considered to have failed to predict this event, even if it predicts the rest of it perfectly.
After registering and agreeing to Shell Terms and Conditions, participating startups or teams will be provided a package of several months’ worth of data to build the solution. During the in-person live hackathon, participants will be given a smaller set of data, with few more weeks, to test and fine tune their solutions. The final solutions will be tested on a holdout data set.
The judges will also analyze the results based on the quality of the pitches. The three best startup companies or teams will be the competition winners and will be invited to join the Shell GameChanger process.
Shell GameChanger is focused on funding high potential early-stage ideas. After TCO19 the awarded companies will be invited to continue the development of the technology applied, ultimately targeting solutions with the potential to be deployed by Shell.
Good luck!
