Challenge Summary

Welcome to the "CROWDFORGOOD - YERC EPIIC Platform Design Challenge Part 2". Topcoder and YERC (Yellowstone Ecological Research Center) are working together to create a new platform to monitor, understand, and improve the health of our planet’s ecosystems called EPIIC (Ecosystem Prognosis Impacts Information Cooperative). This collaboration is part of the “Crowd for Good” initiative (Topcoder's non-profit program) and we are inviting all Topcoder Designers to join and take part in this project to create a better future for our environment.

This is the 2nd challenge of the YERC Topcoder design series challenges planned for the EPIIC project. Even though it’s a non-profit program (No Cash Prizes), there are YERC Exclusive Swag and TCO20 Points available in this challenge series for the winners along with interesting Grand Prizes at the end of the challenge series.

Read the challenge specification carefully and watch the forums for any questions or feedback concerning this challenge. Let us know if you have any questions in the challenge forum!
CHALLENGE PRIZES
  • YERC Topcoder Points that can be collected in this challenge series to get the GRAND PRIZES once the project complete (1st place 1700 points, 2nd place 800 points, 3rd place 250 points)
  • TCO20 Points
  • YERC swag (hats and maps) for the top 3 winners

BACKGROUND OVERVIEW
  • This platform, called EPIIC (Ecosystem Prognosis, Impacts, and Information Cooperative), will be an open-source, collaborative effort built on scalable, cloud-based services, to be used by people around the world to help ecosystems around the world in need of protection and restoration.
  • For this initiative to succeed, it will require lots of data in a timely manner, a robust cloud-based infrastructure, and enthusiastic users of the data who will participate in modeling complex ecological systems.
  • More information about this project background can be found from this LINK

CHALLENGE GOALS
  • Updates Member Role screens based on the latest client request
  • Create design screens for Admin Role

DESIGN CONSIDERATION
  • Simplicity to presented the datasets information
  • Use colors or great visual contrast to highlight a comparison of important information.
  • Intuitive for the user; should never be left asking "what do I do next?"
  • Simplify the display for pages that may be over overcrowded with information
  • Needs to have the same consistency with our design base from the previous design challenge

USER STORIES
  • You can find all user stories from this google drive LINK
  • For this challenge we will focus on the following user stories:
    • Member User Stories
    • Admin User Stories

SCREEN REQUIREMENTS
For this challenge, we are looking for the below screens to be created in your submission. The screen functionality details listed below need to be applied as much as possible. However, If there is a better way to accomplish the same goal, then feel free to take creative liberties:

Member Screen Requirements (Design Updates)
01) My Datasets Screens
  • We need to update the “My Datasets” screen. The latest request is to have the users to be able to see related functions in the same main menu option, e.g. My Datasets.
  • After “My Datasets” menu selected, the following options are available for working with the data:
    • Show Data visualizations such as line/area charts or trend analysis for the top 5-10 priority datasets for the authenticated user
    • Searchable and sortable tabular listing that can be of the datasets the user is subscribed to or has access to. Actions for the dataset can be view more detailed metadata, previewing the data of the dataset, or downloading the dataset
    • Browse/search for other datasets the user may be interested in but not yet subscribed to. Actions for the dataset can be view detailed metadata or previewing the data of the dataset.
    • For the Datasets list:
      • Provide a hierarchical tree structure of datasets that the user has subscribed to.  Grouped the datasets together by projects (RiverNET, LandNET, WildNET, etc) or keywords (water/stream data such as water quality or quantity, or soil data such as soil moisture probes readings, plant productivity from satellite images, etc)
      • When a dataset or type of data is selected, then the corresponding dataset's GPS locations will appear on a map
      • An individual dataset can be selected and an overview of the data available displayed by clicking on a map marker on the map. Summary details (daily avg, min/max) of available parameters such as stream depth, discharge, temperature, the daily average can be displayed by clicking on a link in the overview popup

Admin Screen Requirements
02) Admin Dashboard Screen
  • Show all activities on the platform such as Recent user activity, Recent Datasets access, Traffic in the platform, Recent Forum Post statistic, API statuses, etc

03) Support Screen
  • Ability to help the user resolve problems that are non-IT and related to the functioning of the application. Provide access for the admin where they can find the necessary information about tasks the user may be doing in the application.
  • For example, the user may ask and send queries via email or from forum or from the platform it self: "why haven’t I got my dataset yet?", or "what is the status of the pipeline for my data transformation job?"
  • In order to help resolve the user problem, the Admin will need tho have quick access (can be wizards, search form to find projects, metadata, datasets, or features on the app and check their status, etc) to find information about the problem, fix the problem, and then notify the user on what steps they need to perform to get their problem solved or the Admin can solve the problem directly and notify the user that the problem has been resolved.

04) Metadata Setting Screen
  • Ability to view and update the field research metadata associated with the EPIIC application
  • Examples of metadata include:
    • Field research observation sites
    • Monitoring devices
    • Validation data for various types of data objects
    • Predictive models available on the platform
    • For this challenge, the content of the metadata can be a dummy/placeholder content
  • These metadata will help the users or Admin when creating projects (they can select and add the metadata to the projects)

05) Broadcast Screen
  • Ability to broadcast messages to application users, notifying them of important changes
  • Admin will be able to send it to particular groups of the users or send it to all users at once
  • Ability to set and send the broadcast message in a particular time (Scheduler)

06) User Profile Setting Screen
  • Admin will be able to update profile settings for the users
  • Admin cannot view the user passwords but they will have the ability to reset passwords.

IMPORTANT
  • Keep things consistent. This means all graphics styles should work together
  • All of the graphics should have a similar feel and general aesthetic appearance

MARVEL PROTOTYPE
  • We need you to upload your screens to Marvel App
  • Please request for marvel app in the challenge forum
  • You MUST include your Marvel app URL (in your marvel app prototype, click on share and then copy the link & share it with your notes/comment on this link while you upload)

DOCUMENTATION
  • Design Base (Winning Design from a previous challenge):
  • Two sample datasets from Amphora Platform can be downloaded from This Google Drive Link:
    • "The WaterQuantity file": is a CSV file that contains the depth and temperature data from a sensor for May-Oct 2019.  The depth data is used by in rating curve formula for each site.  For this site, the rating curve formula is 36.18864474767676 + 159.27689683566635x where x is the depth value.  For example, on June 6, 2019, at 7:20 am, the depth was 2.018 and the discharge was 353.0927 cubic ft/s
    • "The NPP file": is a 64 x 110 GeoTIFF raster image where each pixel represents the value of NPP for an 8km square area in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE).  NPP is generated from satellite imagery and measures the difference between how much carbon dioxide is taken in by plants compared to how much is put out by them. This difference is the total amount of carbon dioxide taken in by plants and is called net primary productivity (NPP).  In order to give you an idea of scale, the resolution frequently used for statistical modeling is 100 or 250 square meters.  So for the GYE, this dataset with 100m resolution grows from 7040 pixels to 45,056,000
