Challenge Summary

Welcome to the RUX - NWL TAPP App Design Concepts Challenge! In this RUX challenge, we want to explore the experience for a wearable device (watchOS) that alerts the wearer if they are physically showing signs of fatigue or stress. The device acts as a virtual workmate who looks out for the worker and makes the working environment much safer. We are excited to kick off this challenge!

WHAT IS A RUX CHALLENGE?
The RUX (Rapid User Experience) challenge uses the same format as our famous LUX Challenge, except it is not "Live" at an event. The RUX Challenge Series provides you with an opportunity to show digital leaders from some of the world's largest companies just how good your concept and user experience (UI/UX) design skills are.

RUX (Rapid User Experience) challenges are fast, fun, and have more chances for you to capture prize money!

Note: You do not need to have RUX challenge experience to join this challenge. Just jump in and give it a try! Make sure to follow the challenge details, the challenge forum, and ask questions.

CHALLENGES OBJECTIVES
  • Wearable Application (this challenge focuses on WatchOS and iPhone mobile screens)
  • 2 unique scenario for Watch and Mobile screen views
  • Functional concepts design

JUDGING CRITERIA
Your submission will be judged on the following criteria:
  • Overall idea and execution of concepts
  • How well does your design align with the objectives of the challenge
  • The overall design and user experience
  • Cleanliness of screen design and user flow

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
We are looking to design a wearable application (Apple Watch + iPhone) that would provide NWL employees a virtual mate called TAPP. The TAPP application will actively monitor an employee's health status and alert the wearer if they are physically showing signs of fatigue or stress. Many NWL employees work in potentially hazardous situations and environments and we are looking to create an application that acts as a virtual ‘workmate’ who looks out for the worker and makes the working environment much safer. (See the attached NWL Innovation Festival PDF for additional detail)

EXPLORATION SCORE
In terms of expectations, we would like to measure the concept against the following in the one to ten scales:
  • Creativity: 9
    • 1: barely new ideas
    • 10: a utopic product with features not proven to be able to be fully implemented

  • Aesthetics: 7
    • 1: low-fidelity design, wireframe or plain sketch
    • 10: top-notch finished looking visual design

  • Exploration: 10
    • 1: strictly follow an existing reference or production guideline
    • 10: open to alternative workflows/features not listed here that would help the overall application

  • Branding: 7
    • 1: I don’t care at all about the branding, just functionality
    • 10: without a properly branded product there is no success

TARGET AUDIENCE
  • NWL Employees

PERSONA:
  • Name: Dave Edison
  • Occupation: NWL Onsite Employee
  • Role: Fixing faulty valve or leakage on site
  • Pain Points:
    • Dave usually works alone and drives from one place to another to fix faulty valves or fix the leakage.
    • The very nature of his work can result in out of hours working.
    • Fatigue can cause accidents while working.
  • Wants: A wearable device/virtual workmate which can actively monitor his health status and remind him to take a break to avoid workplace hazards.
  • Proposed Solution: a virtual mate app on wearable devices called TAPP.

SCREEN REQUIREMENTS
For this challenge, we are looking for you to create a set of screens that are easy to use for the following scenarios. Feel free to take creative liberties when designing the screens:

00) App Logo (Mobile and Smart Watch)
  • A simple logo: simple logo which works for the app.
  • Do not spend much time on this. Focus on solving the problem below.

01) Smartwatch Experience Scenario
David wears his smartwatch with TAPP installed which is connected to his smartphone when he leaves for work or heads out into the field.
  • TAPP will constantly monitor various biometric data points in the background and feed this back into an app while highlighting any anomalies.
  • He opens the app on his smartwatch to see an initial check on his health biometric as he feels so refreshed after having good sleep. Data available would be; body temperature, work hour, location, heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, GSR and stress level.
  • The initial check for his health is showing good signs. He can choose to see a detailed view of the health and data point.
  • After arriving at the place which is located in a narrow and deep tunnel, he finds that 10 faulty valves need to be fixed and stressed out on how long it will take. TAPP then recorded an anomaly and remind him to take a TAPP guided “Deep Breathe 60 Second”
  • After taking “Deep Breathe 60 Second”, his stress level reduced and he started working the pipe.
  • While working on the 4th valve, the TAPP notices that his blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) is low and sends an alarm for him to stop working and take a break immediately before any potential danger happens.
  • He stops his work and evacuates immediately.
  • After evacuating to a safe place, he checks his blood oxygen saturation history and sees an estimated time of when he can return to work in optimal condition.
  • Further exploration: enhanced future capability such as when working alone, driving, social distancing, let's go crazy on what possible features can be added here!

02) Mobile Experience Scenario
Show scenario for mobile where:
  • Dave receives notification that is sent from his watch on his smartphone, such as:
    • Sign of fatigue detected
    • Arising stress level
    • Stop working.
  • Dave viewed his health data which actively sent from TAPP on his smartwatch such as body temperature, work hour, location, heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, GSR and stress level.
  • Show history on alert occurred with detail like location, time, and the reason the alert triggered.

03) Presentation Screen - 1920x1080 (16:9 Ratio)
  • In a RUX challenge, this screen is the way to showcase your concept so keep it simple and make it look good!
  • If you were walking into a meeting and needed to sell your idea - use this screen to showcase your concept.
