Challenge Summary

Welcome to the “NASA HATTB Logo Design Challenge”! In this challenge we are looking for your ideas and skills to design a logo for the NASA Human Autonomy Teaming Task Battery application that we have previously designed in other challenges. The logo we will create should be a simple icon for online use, without being too detailed or elaborate.

Note: If you create multiple concepts, please create different submissions. If the designs are very close and there are just some variations, include them in the same submission.

Round 1

Initial design for a Checkpoint Feedback:
1. Initial concepts of the logo
2. Any notes you wish to share with the client

Round 2

Final Design plus Checkpoint Updates:
1. Final presentation of the logo, with checkpoint feedback implemented
2. Any notes you wish to share with the client

BACKGROUND & OVERVIEW
  • The logo we are creating here will primarily be used in the NASA HATTB interface. In this Marvel project you can see the latest designs for this application.
  • The software is titled NASA HATTB which stands for “NASA Human-Autonomy Teaming Task Battery”. The software is a native MacOS and iOS application. It has functionality to provide a simplified version of the real-world tasks performed by remote operators monitoring and controlling vehicles with varying levels of automation (a.k.a. pilots controlling drones). The primary use case for HATTB is a psychology researcher studying the performance of participants as they complete specific defined Scenarios.
  • Target audience: the researcher and the participant who are using the application for the experiments.
    • Researcher = Experimental Psychologist
    • Participant = Psychology Student
  • Concept, composition, and simplicity will be taken into serious consideration in the selection process. We are looking for characteristics common to many great logos; clean, simple, and easy to recognize. The logo should encapsulate the message of the subject very quickly and be memorable.
  • The logo should be a simple icon for online use, without being too detailed or elaborate.

DESIGN SPECIFICS
  • The logo will be used as an identity for the application and be placed on the homepage of the app as well as in the application store. Keep in mind the application store aspect for your icon design so the proportions work well and look balanced. Read here more about the application store icon.
  • The logo is NOT intended for print or other marketing materials.
  • The logo should include the icon plus 2 options for text:
    • full application name: “Human-Autonomy Teaming Task Battery”
    • acronym: “HATTB”
  • In most places we will use only the standalone icon (symbol), so it must work independently from the typography.
  • Themes for inspiration:
    • Human Factors
    • Human-Autonomy Teaming
    • Psychology & Behavioral Studies
  • AVOID any reference to:
    • Space
    • Science as related to chemistry or biology
  • DO NOT replicate NASA logos in any way
  • DO NOT pair or combine this logo with the NASA logo

REQUIREMENTS
  • Your logo design submission must follow these requirements:
  • Your LOGO should include the below options
    • Symbol only
    • Symbol + “NASA HATTB”
    • Symbol + “NASA Human-Autonomy Teaming Task Battery”
  • APPLICATION ICON: based on the logo, design a simple application icon to be used in the application store for iPad (152x152 px @2x)
  • Source designs must be created as VECTOR artwork so they may be resized without a loss of quality.
  • Provide an outlined version of your logo.
  • For presentation purpose, include design options showing:
    • Full Color, on white background
    • Full Color, on black background
    • Black & White, on white background
    • Black & White, on black background
    • Logo placed in NASA HATTB preview design instead of the left logo
  • Final submissions must be provided in the formats: .ai, .eps and .png. We will need versions with a white background, black background, and transparent background.
  • You may include your thought process for your design in a text file/notes with your submission.

BRANDING GUIDELINES
  • Palette: Colors should be based on those used in the existing user interface
  • Fonts: Open to any font allowed in Topcoder rules. The application UI will use San Francisco Pro font that is native to MacOS and iOS.

DESIGN INSPIRATION
Explore some logo design inspiration websites. A good logo should be: simple, distinctive, relevant, memorable, timeless, and versatile - and most importantly your own design. Use these references for inspiration only:
JUDGING CRITERIA
Your submission will be judged on the following criteria:
  • Relevance:  How does your logo "fit" the subject described?
  • Quality: Does your logo look fresh, professional, and clean? Is the composition/layout well done? Does the icon looks good in the application store?
  • Concept: Does your logo present a new and interesting concept? Is it simple, yet memorable?
