Challenge Summary

Welcome to the ASME Engineering Game Idea Generation Contest. We will be developing a new game about Engineering, and we need your creative ideas to help us decide what game to develop with the goal of encouraging and enlightening the youth of today about engineering careers by reaching them through gaming.

Round 1

Initial submission with all their features mentioned in the Requirement section.

Round 2

Final submission plus any checpoint update

Primary Goal
The American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) would like to encourage and enlighten the youth of today (13-18 year old demographic) about engineering and the flexibility, excitement and rewards of all kinds of engineering careers by reaching them through gaming at the middle school level. Although ASME represents mechanical engineers, these games can speak to engineering in any broad way as the way people design and create solutions to important (or fun) challenges in this world.

Did you know that exposure to Engineering doubles teens' career interest? About 63% of teens have never considered a career in engineering (Engineering ranks only 11th out of 19 in a list of careers students are familiar with), 44% say they would consider engineering as a career if they knew more about it!

The objective of the game is to encourage and enlighten middle school and high school students (13-18 year old demographic) to play with challenges in an "engineer a solution" kind of way t hrough the use of games and allow them to experience what engineering is all about. Challenges can relate to mechanical, civil, materials, or other engineering – or anything fun that requires a designed and tested solution. Though the target users will be ages 13-18 years old, the game should still be doable for kids as young as 10 years old in early in levels but the game can be developed to appeal and challenge 17 and 18 year olds.

The primary goal of this contest is to help us with your idea on what is the best game to develop that will fit the objective of the game and focusing on the following areas:

Topic
Challenges can relate to mechanical, civil, materials, or other engineering – or anything fun that requires a designed and tested solution – and ideally, inspires creativity in solutions – there can be more than one!

The game concept can, for example, be in the area of Mechanical Engineering that deals with machines and tools, mechanical power, and the design of mechanical systems with the principles related to but not limited to heat transfer, energy, fluid mechanics and kinematics. An example of a game like this can start from a simple drag and drop of gears of different sizes and attached to pins to start a funny machine, once the machine is started the level is accomplished. The game can get difficult as the level increases.

Platform
The game should be web and browser based, just like the existing games of NoNameSite.com ( https://www.nonamesite.com/web/cs-stem/activities )

Extensibility
The game concept should be extensible and modular to allow new content or levels to be created and added to the game system.

Metrics
Eventually we would like to know or collect data and  feedback on how the game is played by the target audience, how well they are making progress, etc... Though it is not required to be specific on what data to capture, it is important to keep this in mind.

Additional information
This is optional, but it would be great if you can explain how the game will encourage the target audience, and any other notes about your idea.

Important
Do not copy text from other sources. Read more information about Idea Generation copyright policies here: Copyright Questions.

Target Audience
- middle school and high school students (13-18 year old demographic)

Judging Criteria
- creativity, quality, and durability of the game idea
- how the game incorporate, some engineering principles; such as challenge to design-build-test; use of forces and motion principles; or other engineering elements.

Submission & Source Files

Final Fixes
As part of the final fixes phase you may be asked to complete one round of minor changes to ensure your submission meets the stated requirements of this contest.

Please read the challenge specification carefully and watch the forums for any questions or feedback concerning this challenge. It is important that you monitor any updates provided by the client or Studio Admins in the forums. Please post any questions you might have for the client in the forums.

Stock photography is not allowed in this challenge. All submitted elements must be designed solely by you. See this page for more details.

How To Submit

  • New to Studio? ‌Learn how to compete here
  • Upload your submission in three parts (Learn more here). Your design should be finalized and should contain only a single design concept (do not include multiple designs in a single submission).
  • If your submission wins, your source files must be correct and “Final Fixes” (if applicable) must be completed before payment can be released.
  • You may submit as many times as you'd like during the submission phase, but only the number of files listed above in the Submission Limit that you rank the highest will be considered. You can change the order of your submissions at any time during the submission phase. If you make revisions to your design, please delete submissions you are replacing.

Winner Selection

Submissions are viewable to the client as they are entered into the challenge. Winners are selected by the client and are chosen solely at the client's discretion.
