The Challenge
General Electric(GE) Digital launched the Predix Platform to bring Industrial IoT (IIoT) capabilities to the manufacturing and industrial sectors. To support the platform’s success, GE needed to rapidly assemble a global network of developers skilled in Predix technologies.
The goal wasn’t just to recruit—it was to educate, scale, and sustain an expert developer community that could contribute to GE’s open-source initiatives and deliver real value to industrial customers.
The Solution
Topcoder partnered with GE to build and activate the Predix Expert Community. Through a mix of challenges and campaigns, Topcoder mobilized developers worldwide, raised awareness of the platform, and upskilled members on Predix technologies.
Thousands of participants engaged in open-source projects, testing, and development tasks. Within just three months, the community surpassed its initial goal of 2,000 developers—eventually scaling to over 9,000 members. The community also contributed directly to GE’s innovation pipeline through challenge-based development and QA.

The Impact
GE rapidly achieved scale in developer adoption of its Predix Platform, accelerating both ecosystem growth and technical contributions. With over 430 challenges launched and developers from 43 countries participating, GE gained a global, always-on community capable of driving continuous innovation.
The initiative increased awareness of GE’s IoT leadership and created a sustainable pipeline of technical expertise across open-source and customer-facing projects.
