The Challenge
A global technology company aimed to explore and promote the real-world capabilities of its EdgeX Foundry™ open-source platform by identifying innovative use cases and building a UI application that could process and visualize data at the edge.
The initiative required integrating data from multiple IoT protocols (like Redis and MQTT) and devices, with no predefined UI or backend—posing both a technical and creative challenge.
The Solution
Through a four-part Topcoder challenge series, including an ideation contest and three UI development challenges, the community delivered a fully functional desktop application. Innovators proposed diverse IoT use cases and developed a cross-platform UI in GoLang that monitored EdgeX’s core messaging bus in real time. Features included navigation panels, event and reading summaries, ca tegory filters, user-defined settings, and compatibility with both Redis and MQTT protocols.
The final solution offered a plug-and-play application ready to support future EdgeX use cases and POCs.

The Impact
The customer received a lightweight, extendable UI application demonstrating the practical use of EdgeX in edge computing. The open innovation process produced not only usable code but also new use case ideas, implementation diagrams, and reusable assets for future development.
The project helped reinforce EdgeX’s value across industries such as smart retail, manufacturing, and energy—while showcasing how crowdsourcing accelerates innovation in complex ecosystems.
