In Jira, the board displays all the issues from a project. The board provides a flexible way of viewing, managing, and reporting on the work in progress. The board can display up to 5000 issues at a time.
In Jira, the boards are of three types:
Next-gen board: This board is useful for teams who are new to agile. It is a very simple, straightforward, and streamlined board to easily get started working with your team.
Scrum board: This board is useful for teams working on sprints that include a backlog.
Kanban board: This board is useful for teams that focus on an agile project management tool designed for visualizing work, limiting work in progress, and maximizing efficiency.
We can create a board or use the board that someone else has created. A project can have one or more boards and a combination of scrum, kanban, and agility boards.
Depending on what we need to do we’ll click on one of the following:
If we are on a next-gen board then go to Project Settings > Features to click on features such as backlog and sprints.
If we are on a scrum board we can choose backlog, active sprints, or reports.
If we are on a kanban board we can choose kanban board, backlog, or reports.
The scrum board consists of the following three parts.
Backlog: The backlog is a set of activities or issues available in the project. We can create and update the issues, drag and drop issues to rank them and assign them to sprints, epics or versions, and more.
Active sprint: The active sprint of a scrum board displays the issues on which the team is currently working. We can create and update issues, and drag and drop issues to transition them through a workflow.
Reports: Reporting is an activity that will be done throughout the project. In Jira, we can make reports that show information about our project, versions, sprints, epic, and issues.
Backlog
Kanban board by default has the backlog column, where we plan work for our team. When planning work in a small column becomes very difficult, then we can use a kanban backlog. A kanban backlog provides a bigger space for handling the issues.
First, we need to create an issue, then it will be added to the backlog automatically.
This is a process based on the continuous delivery of work. In this, the workflow is not planned by the iterations but it is monitored continuously, which means that when the tasks are completed, the new task is added in the In Progress state.
There are the following three states of the kanban board.

Reports
Reporting is an activity that will be done throughout the project. In Jira, we use reports to show the information about our project, versions, sprints, epic, and issues in reports.
The next-gen board is like a classic scrum and kanban board. In the beginning, the next-gen board does not provide all the features, it provides the features only when we need them. The next-gen project can be done in the following two templates.
Next-gen Scrum
Next-gen Kanban
These are the steps to create a Next-gen project:
First, we click on the create project button drop-down menu and then we select the try next-gen project option.
After the try next-gen project button is clicked on the below screen appears.
This screen shows that we have chosen the scrum template, we can change the template by clicking on the link change template.
Click on the create button to create the next-gen scrum project.
